WonderCon Roll Call

Post by maichan »

Who's going and when?

I'll be attending on Saturday and will be picking up goodies for those members that can't make and made arrangements with Stan and me beforehand.

In the 2012 convention thread there was talk of a possible Dojo photo-op....
Does anyone have any more info if it will happen or not?

Anyhow, if you're going, please let us know!

If a photo op does happen, it can't be Saturday between noon and 1:30. I will be with Mike Richardson announcing our new, secret project.

Alright! Stan, what session is the announcement going to be in? I don't see Mike Richardson in the Saturday schedule at that time: http://www.comic-con.org/wc/wc_prog_sat.php Thanks!

Maichan, I can make myself available. The only panel that I would hate to miss is 4:30 - 5:30 Geek Slant: How the East Meets the West. I'm only going on Saturday, so I still have to pick up my badge, I don't know how long that will take but I'm hoping we will get in close to the start.

I set up a Doodle if you all want to use that to schedule a time:
http://www.doodle.com/r8ciwr8vkrsyb88i
(For those who haven't used doodle - follow the link, enter your name [can be you UYD user name, any made up name, or your real name] and select all the times you can meet up [click on the scrunched up part of the timeline to expand times]. We can post here the time that has the most common time).

Stan, what is your table number again? I assume the UYDers will meet there for the UYDer photo.

I'm so looking forward to WonderCon, meeting up and enjoying the creative word of comics with people who love comics! Have a great weekend!

Peace, maka

Hey Maka! I added my name to your Doodle list.

If you can edit the start and end times I think the show actually runs from 10am to 7pm. Not sure if it will actually matter. I plan to get there at opening and stay at least till noon. I may attend the Stan & Mike Richardson panel if I can find it. Lucky for me I'm local, so I guess I can always leave and come back (assuming they allow for re-entry?).

This will be my second comic con ever to attend. My first was Long Beach last year. This looks much bigger. None of my close friends are into comics, so I'll be doing the event solo. Not sure what I'll do except wander around & check out the sights. There's a few other artists I've followed over the years, but Stan is really the only one I'm still into.

Newby question... do most artists do autographs for free or do they charge? I assume if they charge they would have it clearly marked at their table somewhere. Rather than bring individual books or comics to be signed, I thought I might just bring a single autograph/sketch book to make things simpler for myself ... any recommendations on an actual book to use for this?

Done. I can't stay that long but if more people can make it, great.

Your badge will allow you re-entry.

As for what to do, I really like the attending the sessions/panels. Any session with Mark Evanier is entertaining because he is a great story teller. Womanthology is a pretty amazing success story and live art Jam looks cool. I like going to see old school comic creators and hearing their stories of the early days. I also like the hearing about the latest in digital comics.

It depends on the artist. Some charge and some don't. I have a medium size sketchbook (smaller than 8"x11") that I use to collect artist self-portraits. It's fun. I think any size that you are willing to carry around is good. See you there! Peace, maka

Thanks for the reply.

I added myself to the early hours on Doodle.... the hours are out of sequence, but that's okay ~

I need to sit down and look over what is happening on Saturday, and also check the artists who will be there.

Listening to Mark Evanier sounds like it could be entertaining.

Yeah, I was pretty much thinking an 8x11 permanent bound sketchbook should do nicely. I will have to try & find one tonight. - By "artist self-portraits", do you mean you ask them to do portrait of themselves? LOL, that's a cool way of doing it.

I've not heard of anyone in comics charging to merely sign something, except Stan Lee, but he's a bit of a special case. Sketch or draw yes, but not merely sign.

Have you ever posted any of those self portraits Maka? I'd be curious to see them :)

I have taken my nephews to several of the Motor City Comic Cons, and at all three we have picked up sketches from various guests of their interpretation of Usagi (as well as other subjects if the artists preferred). Lately, free sketches are becoming rarer, but still available, especially if you buy something from the artist.

Hope everyone attending is having fun this weekend at WonderCon, and I wish I was able to attend.

Well, I now have a blank sketchbook in hand. Let's see how many entries I can get tomorrow....

WonderCon is a blast so far. Having a great time. We took in the Quick Draw yesterday with host Mark Evanier and artists Mike Kazaleh, Scott Shaw, and Floyd Norman -- it was hysterical -- my son's fave panel so far. They called Sergio (out of commission at the moment) on Mark's iPhone to discuss his hospital experience and even had a Sergio-in-the-hospital drawing competition. Too good.

We're at the R2 builder's panel (my son and I are planning out our first R2 build) from 10:30-11:30 today, then over to see Stan at Noon to see what this secret project is (wherever that panel may be). Then it's off to see Ridley Scott at 1:15 for the Prometheus panel 8)

After that we're planning to roam the exhibit hall. If anyone wants to meet up at Stan's for a photo op, would anyone be able to make it at 3PM?

Man it's really pouring outside!

Sounds like fun so far.

I'll be there... rain or shine.

Last time I was at the Anaheim Convention center was over 30 years ago.
Hows the parking? Your local right? Where do you park? I was planning on getting there at 10... how early do you recommend I actually get there to get inside on time? I'm coming from Huntington Beach.
Sorry, but never attended so don't know what to expect size/people wise...

Went to WonderCon yesterday and had a great time. I was only able to stay a short time, but accomplished my main goal - meet with Stan!

The weather outside was wet & windy, but the atmosphere inside was warm and friendly! This was my first 'big' con, and I was unprepared for the number of people attending. I thought I'd get there early and park at the convention center, but instead I opted to park at Anaheim Stadium and take the free shuttle to the center.

I managed to briefly meet up with Maka and his friend Mark, but since I was limited for time we went our own ways.

I received a bag of goodies from Stan, and will get these items packaged up and shipped out in the next day or so...

Image

As for myself, I picked up a couple of more HC from Stan...
Image

...and also a couple of prints...
Image

...as well as asking Stan to do a quick sketch for me and sign my sketch/autograph book...

I have to extend a big round of thanks to Stan for signing all my books and stuff - he really is the friendliest man in comics!
I had hoped to get a good start to my sketchbook, however I was a little disheartened with my encounters with other artists... maybe it was just me, I'm not very outgoing or forward with people I don't know, so I'm a bit timid especially when meeting artists I've always looked up to. Perhaps I need to practice more...
But Stan was friendly and gracious as always!
I'll post up some more and better pictures in my gallery soon, so stay tooned!

Jahne!

wondercon...BIG thank you!

Post by Trevis Woods »

I cannot even begin to explain how awesome Maichan is for hooking me up with a few things from Stan and Wondercon.

I am amazed and humbled at the generosity of complete strangers and the continued generosity of Stan to make little requests like this possible for those of us that can't make a con on the coasts.

Also a big thank you to the Dojo for giving us all a forum to have opportunities like this to get more and more out of this wonderful world of Usagi!!!

Here's hoping for a Con appearance somewhere in the middle states within 6 hours of home so I can finally meet Stan and repay the favor to somebody else.

Thank you again...

Hey Mike, Thanks again for all your help.

I also just wanted to add a quick note to complement you on the great sketches Stan did for you. They look awesome!

I Love them both, and if for any reason what-so-ever you decide you no longer want them,

I call first dibs!!!

:D
