What's the best place to begin for reading Usagi? Something in print and generally available please

My answer to that would be to start anywhere! Current issue, check you comic store for back issues. Any trade paperback would be fine, since the whole storyline would be included.

What does everyone else say?

If you want to start at the beginning of his life, I would suggest UY Book:2 Samurai from Fantagraphics. It tells of his early years, training, going on to serve a lord, and how he became a masterless samurai. It's still in print, as is all or most of the trade collections.
