From Facebook:

Tomorrow marks the first day commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo. The internationally famous tales of Mr. Sakai's ronin rabbit first saw print in 1984's Albedo Anthropomorphics #2 published by Thoughts and Images. In 1986, Fantagraphics Books picked up the black-and-white title and published it first as part of their anthology book, Critters. A year later Fantagraphics launched UY as it's own series. In 1993 Mirage Studios picked up the title, where it ran in color for the next two years. In 1996, the book was picked up by Dark Horse Comics, where it has been published for over 17 years.

In the past 30 years Stan has wowed us with Usagi, a comic that has endured the test of time, and has provided to countless fans worldwide an historically accurate 17th-century Japanese storytelling experience unlike no other. Usagi's tales have been picked up by publishers across the globe, translated into multiple languages, and has astounded young and old alike.

Recently Usagi's creator Stan Sakai and his family have endured hardship on an unimaginable scale. The outpouring of support for the Sakai's from fans and fellow professionals alike has been awe-inspiring during their time of great loss and suffering.

From your friends at the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo, we extend a big thank you to all who have supported our Sensei and his family. Thank you for keeping them in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time.

Out of curiosity because I genuinely don't know this, when in 1984 was Albedo #2 published? To further define when the 30th anniversary "ticks over"...

As I understood it, Albedo didn't have any kind of distribution. It was just brought along to conventions. Thus, wouldn't the anniversary really be the date of the first convention Albedo #2 was brought to?

Albedo #2 was in comic book stores when it came out. I remember seeing copies at Richard Kyle's in Long Beach and Village Bookstore in Pasadena.

I recall seeing it a few years after it was published (around '87-88), on the shelf at American Comic Book Company which used to be in Long Beach on Atlantic Ave... I looked at that cover every time I went in there, but never bought a copy....

I do remember in 1984 or 85 that Mile High Comics was offering Albedo in their catalog at that time. I always wondered what it was. I was about 11 years old at the time and mainly into just Marvel and DC comics. Interviews on this site cite both 1984 and 1985 as to when Albedo #2 appeared. As for when the book was "finished", it is 1984 according to Steve Gallacci's intro in the book itself (http://usagiyojimbo.com/casl/comics/alb ... inside.jpg), Albedo 2 was written in August '84 but not finished until November '84. I am assuming by "Albedo" he meant Erma. The assumption is that once it was "finished" it was immediately printed. It may have not appeared on the racks until 1985, but I don't have any doubts the book itself existed in finished printed form in 1984.

If you really want to get technical, there are interviews on this site where Stan states he first drew "Usagi" (then called only "Miyamoto") as a human in 1981, and then as a rabbit in 1982. So technically he is ~32 years old.

I also remember visiting Stan's UY exhibit in July 2011 at the JANM and I (vaguely) recall seeing about 4 early sketches of Usagi and related characters which the exhibit indicated they were done in the late 70s. Does anyone else recall that?

Print Runs for issues 1-5 of Albedo Vol. 1 (according to Steve Gallacci):
Albedo NR 1 (5-color cover) June 1984 - 500 Copies
Albedo NR 1 (4-color cover) September 1984 - 1500 copies
Albedo NR 2 November 1984 - 2000 copies
Albedo NR 3 May 1985 - 10,000 copies
Albedo NR 4 August 1985 - 6000 copies
