Nansō Satomi Hakkenden (Eight Dog Chronicles)

After listening to Moisés Chiullan's Giant Size podcast I became intersted in the "Eight Dog Chronicles" series.

Does anyone know of any English translations out there. I realize that they will be abridged but I would love to read some of these stories. I have read Yoshikawa's "Musashi" (Terry's abridged translation--which, in my opinion, is fantastic) a few times as well as "Taiko" but the "Eight Dog" stories sound really great.

Thanks,
Buck

There is an anime series based on the Hakkenden. Entertaining, no idea how faithful to the written work:

The 1959 Toei Nansō Satomi Hakkenden (Eight Dog Chronicles) DVD's came in this week and the kiddos and I are eagerly awaiting watching them tonight as it is movie night! Total of 3 DVD's in the pack. They look like they will be super fun, esp for the 6 and 8 year old. From the packaging they remind me of the old Sinbad movies that I used to watch as a little kid in the mid-to-late 70's.

As for the novel in English, I cannot find it. But I will let you know how the films are and what the kiddos think of them.

Watched the first disc last night and it was as good as expected. The kids loved it as did my wife and I. Really reminds me of the old Sinbad movies that they used to show on the weekends in the '70's. Great fun and highly recommend to anyone that likes those old type "magical" movies with the less than perfect special effects.

Cannot wait to watch the other two discs this weekend.

The 3-part one is my favorite. I also have the 12 part anime which changed the story significantly, and the Shinichi Chiba version which almost does not resemble the story at all. I have 4 of the 5 parter on VHS, sent to me many years ago by someone in Japan. It is not subtitled and incomplete so I have never watched it. I see it is out on DVD so may get it from the internet story. Has anyone seen it? Is it good?

Just watched the "Message From Space" one last night with the kiddos on Netflix (Shinichi Chiba 1978 version). HOLY Cheese Factor 10 Batman! This movie was soooooo awful it was good. We all just sat round rolling on the floor watching it. If you need a MST3000 type film, this is for you!

If it's good enough for the Satellite of Love, then it's good enough for me.
