Post by Pekass »

I´m preparing to moderate some adventures on UY´s RPG, and as in the book there is no mention to money, i would like to know the value of the coins (What can i buy with a rio or a bu?)
Please can anyone help me with this?

Has some vague intimations that money as such wasn't used much pre-1400.

Much more useful; since it's another game, you can't say for certain how well researched it is, but:
Money - while there was a monetary system, money was usually directly convertable to an equivalent in rice, and income was measured in rice. Rice equivalents varied throughout the Edo period, but for game purposes, money is as follows:
One Zeni (a small round copper coin with a square hole in the middle), equaled one meal of rice or one cup of tea.
A Mon (which was silver), equalled rice for a month (around 67 Zeni ).
A Ryo or Koban (an oval gold coin), equalled rice for 4 years (say 60 Mon or 4 Koku).
Zeni, 15-Zeni, Mon, and Ryo coins will be used in the game (Like you'll ever see a Ryo).

From yet another game-- an interesting look at relative value of any given item vs. set prices
It's not an easy item to research online-- You'd probably have a better time looking up "Japan-History" at your local library, and see whether you can find useful entries in the indeces of the books there-- the names of the coins are good things to look for, or things like "Monetary system".
