UY Chronology in Books

Post by Slashuur »

Hello, my dear fellows!

My name is Aldo and this is my first post in the Forum :D

I'd like to know in which order must I read the Books: Space Usagi, Yokai and Senso.
I'm guessing there will be no problem with Space Usagi but with the other two, is there any order that you can recommend me? I don't wanna spoil myself... :?:
Right now I've finished the 'Daisho' Book.

Have a great day, you all! And thanks in advance!
Abayo!

Senso is supposed to happen in the future, 20 years or so after the current events depicted in Usagi.
While I don't think it spoils the main series and can be read as a standalone, I think it is better appreciated when you are already familiar with the characters, so I would personally read it last. But honestly I don't think it really matters.

And welcome to the Dojo. :D

Welcome to the Dojoboard, Aldo!
I haven't read Yokai yet, but I have read the other two. Space Usagi takes place in a different time period and features different versions of the characters, so that one can be read without spoiling anything. Senso is also set in a possible future, but only about 15 years after the events of the regular stories. There are some story elements that rely on spoilers from previous stories, but I don't think there are many (it's been a while since I've read it, though).
I hope you enjoy this forum!

Thank you, Eltanin and Lobster Johnson! It's great to be part of the Dojo!

I didn't know Senso took place 15-20 years in the future! Sounds awesome! :)

Now I just need info about the Yokai Book, I really want to get all the references(if any) in the Book so I can enjoy it 100%.

Have you read any stories with Sasuke in them yet (I forget when he comes more into the picture)? Would help with Yokai to know him better, but it's a standalone story regardless.

Sasuke's first appeared was in the story "Kumo" Which is in Book 14 (Demon Mask). That is pretty much a stand alone story and about the only thing That might be helpful (but not necessary) to enjoy Yokai.

Since Senso is set in the near future, it does contain a lot of potential spoilers concerning the fates of a lot of the main characters, but there is a twist at the end the theoretically throws all those spoilers out the window.

The only real spoilers are if you have not read the "Samurai", "Homecoming", and "Circles" story lines from the Fantagraphics books (Books 2 & 5I believe).

Thanks, Maka! It's been great so far!

And thank you, too, Steve! I've read the ones that you mention :) I'll wait until I read Kumo.

The whole point of this topic is so I can fully enjoy Usagi. And you all have been helpful! Thanks for sharing with me. I really appreciate it :)

Sasuke was meant to come into the Usagi universe a LOT earlier (you can find a promo image Stan drew featuring Usagi, Tomoe and Sasuke from around the time of Usagi appearing in the Critters comics) but as Steve notes, didn't actually appear until Book 14.

Welcome to the Dojo Slashuur-san!

Many members have given you great info thus far, so there is little I can add, other than this....

How much of the regular Usagi stories have you read so far? Have you read Usagai from the beginning? If not, maybe you want to start there...

If you have the comics, trade paper backs or hardcovers available to you, start from the beginning and work your way to the present. Read them in chronological publication order, and read the stand-alone titles according to when they were published in relation to the comics. That way everything can be read just as it would have when originally published. I know, that's a lot of reading, but probably the safest way the entire series and get the 'whole picture'.

Basically you can read Space Usagi at any point in time, since it is so distant in the future.

I'm not 100% sure about Yokai, but it appears to have been published in November 2009, which could fit it between:
Sep/2009 - issue #123 - The Death of Lord Hikiji and Nov/2009 - issue #124 - A Town Called Hell part 1
OR
Dec/2009 - issue #125 - A Town Called Hell part 2 and Feb/2010 - issue #126 - Nukekubi
(maybe Steve has a better idea as to exactly when & where).

Save Senso and read it between issue #144 (Shoyu part 2) and issue #145 (The Thief and the Kunoichi part 1), since that's when it was published.

I hope this helps, but no matter how you read them, I'm sure you'll enjoy them!

Now I think I should sit down and start over from the beginning myself...

Thank you, maichan!
Yes, I've read from the beginning. I'm almost finished with the 'Daisho' Book :)
I'll keep in mind your recommendations ;)
And that's right it's a lot of reading... But I love it! Every page is amazing! I like to enjoy and take my time watching all the details.
Comes to my mind the 'Jizo' story. The perspective, all the characters passing by and the actions happening in the background, and of course the meaning of the story, I liked it a lot!

That Bibliography is so complete!! Thanks for the heads-up, maichan!
And of course thanks, Steve, por putting all together!
