Usagi Yojimbo: Origins vol. 1

Post by jabba359 »

Looks like the first collection of recolored Usagi stories has been announced. The first volume coming out is regular tpb in length, as this one contains 7 issues (192 pages).

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/book ... tan-sakai/

Since it's listed as "Origins vol. 1," I find the naming a bit odd, as I wonder if all subsequent releases will fall under the "Origins" moniker (because most of them won't be dealing with Usagi's origins, but rather just his "pre-IDW" times), or if we'll have a couple volumes of Origins, then a couple volumes of something else, and then a couple more of some other title, etc.?

If "Origins" is going to persist across all the releases, I think they should have just stuck with "Color Classics" instead, as that would be more accurate than calling everything an "origin" story. If they plan on changing the title after a couple volumes (for example: Origins vol. 1-3, then New Title vol. 1-2, followed by Newer Title vol. 1-4, etc), that might be a bit confusing for new readers wondering where each set of volumes takes place in relation to another set of volumes.

It's also possible that perhaps they put the title in the wrong order on these announcements, and it should read "Usagi Yojimbo vol. 1: Origins" and then the next one would be "Usagi Yojimbo vol. 2: xxxxxx." That would frankly make a lot more sense to me than calling them all "Origins" or changing the title every few volumes, and would fit with the easy to understand naming format of "Usagi Yojimbo book ##: TITLE" that is currently used.

Maybe it’s just origins vol. 1 as in
Name, vol. 1
New name, vol. 2
New new name, vol. 3

Sorta like
Mysteries, book 32
The hidden, book 33

That’s my guess, I have no inside information.

Peace, maka

That was my observation for my third option above, but the order the title is listed in is important, as they mean two different things because the "volume" indicator applies to the entire title that precedes it:

Usagi Yojimbo: Origins, vol. 1 means it is the first volume of "Usagi Yojimbo: Origins," where "Origins" is an intrinsic part of the title, so this is only the first of many "Usagi Yojimbo: Origins" volumes.
Usagi Yojimbo, vol. 1: Origins means it's the first volume of "Usagi Yojimbo" (with Origins just being the subtitle), so a second volume of "Usagi Yojimbo" would be free to use a different subtitle.

For instance, if volume 2 used "Wanderings" and they called it "Usagi Yojimbo: Wanderings, vol. 2," a new reader might see it on the shelf and wonder where "Usagi Yojimbo: Wanderings, vol. 1" is, as the "vol. 2" modifier applies to the entire title preceding it. On the other hand, "Usagi Yojmbo, vol. 2: Wanderings" on a shelf would let the reader know it's volume 2 of "Usagi Yojimbo", and they wouldn't necessarily expect volume 1 to also be called "Wanderings."

Is this going to be just paperback?

I thought the book plates Stan showed on IG (Kyle shared on FB) were related to the limited edition of this book (assuming it is hardcover). Okay, I looked it up on Stan FB page. It's a limited edition hardcover. Peace, maka

Those bookplates are for Bunraku and Other Stories, not for this.

If they're going to skip the somewhat rougher earliest material they can always circle back to it as "Volume 0."
