Ringo & NCS Awards

Post by Maka »

Dear UYDers,

As you saw on social media, Stan is nominated again for his cartooning and storytelling:

RINGO Awards: https://ringoawards.com/?fbclid=IwAR32C ... oNQcPyCkfY
  • Best Cartoonist (Writer/Artist)
  • Best Series
National Cartoonist Society Silver Reuben: https://www.nationalcartoonists.com/202 ... Di0eFIU0nI
  • Comic Books
Stan has always been recognized by his peers and fans as a talented cartoonist, storyteller, and letter. But does it seem like the last couple of years since the move to IDW have raised his profile in terms of awards? He won every award he was nominated for in 2020, including being inducted into the Eisner Hall of Fame. So five awards so since that time, on my count (which might be wrong). And there are these additional three nominations above.

What is it about now that has brought this recognition? I can't say it is overdue because Stan has been recognized throughout his career. But the last two years have been recognition of Stan's talent. Did moving to color have something to do with that? Does the Netflix deal raise awareness as well? What other factors are contributing to Stan's greatness awareness/recognition that we fans have known all along?

In any case, CONGRATULATIONS, Stan! We are very proud of you. Proud to be long-time fans of you and your work. We are happy that so many good things are happening for Usagi and your work in this season of life for you and your family.

Peace, maka

In the first 30 years, Stan won 4 Eisners. In the following 6 years, he's won 6 more plus was inducted into the Hall of Fame. That's a pretty incredible run lately!

I'm not sure what is the cause of all the super recent awards/wins. Of course Stan deserves them all, but I'd say he's been deserving this entire time. I'd guess that the Netflix show and move to color have helped raise the profile and awareness of just how great of a comic book Usagi is. Seems like it's started to reach the tipping point from "slightly obscure" and is going over more into the mainstream (and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible).

I hope all these awards and attention bring many new fans. Then I can shake my cane at them and shout from my rocking chair on the porch, "I liked Usagi before he was cool! And when he was only printed on dead tree material! Now get off my lawn you rapscallions!" 8)

Got room for one more? Although I think I may be eligible to move in before most of you younglings.

We should establish an old folks home for Usagi & Stan fans.

Ditto.

I agree with what everyone else has said. While Stan has been deserving of these awards from the start, I think a combination of factors has brought his attention to more people in recent years, and I think part of it started with Usagi's reappearance in the TMNT episodes a few years ago, the the buzz over the NETFLIX show, as well as the IDW new stories and old stories done in color.

Kampai to our sensei! :D
