May 5--Happy Children's Day

Post by Stan Sakai »

May 5 is Children's Day (kodomo no hi) in Japan. It used to be Boys' Day, and March 3 was Girls' Day, but it's been incorporated to celebrate both sexes. March 3 is now Dolls' Day.

In the US, May 5 is also Cartoonists Day. May 5 1895 was the first time that Richard Outcault's The Yellow Kid first saw print. May 3-9 is Cartoonists Week.

Today is also the day the Jim Scancarelli reveals who died in the Gasoline Alley newspaper strip. Does anyone on the board get in in their newspaper? If so, let us know the answer to the mystery.

Living in Southern California, I'm well aware of Cinco de Mayo. It celebrates the victory of the Mexican army over the larger French forces at the Battle of Puebla.

We were going to go out for Mexican food tonight, but those restaurants tend to be busy on Cinco de Mayo. We'll do it Friday and celebrate Siete de Mayo.

May 5 is also the end of Golden Week--four national holidays celebrated one after the other:

3/29 Green Day (Midori no Hi) used to be the birthday of Emperor Showa who died in 1989. It was changed to Green Day, and now celebrates the environment.

5/3 Constitution Day (Kenpo Kinen Bi) celebrates the day the Japanese constitution was put into effect.

5/4 Between Day is the day that falls between two national holidays. The Japanese celebrated by turning it into a national holiday.

Gasoline Alley comic strips online

Post by Andy »

You can read Gasoline Alley strips online at www.comicspage.com

I read it today, but didn't see that there was any revelation obvious to me, but I haven't been following it.

You can also get comics strips sent to your email each day there and at ucomics.com

I get Dick Tracy in my email each day and Big Nate. You only get one from each site for free.
