I can't help but wonder who exactly is "dreaming" Jei's past in the first four panels of page one. The obvious answer would be Inazuma, but I've never seen Jei or Inazuma sleep in such cozy surroundings before - comparatively speaking.

We only need to wait another couple of weeks for the first part of the answer to that question, and then only one more month for the second part. Let's just knuckle down and wait instead of pokin' and proddin' poor ol' Stan.
I just remembered something. The Jei-like mask seen on the cover of 103 reminds me of Oni masks. Maybe the evil spirit of Jei is an oni that thinks it serves the gods.
Ben wrote:The Jei story arc might parallel the SUMI-E plot a little, in that Jizonobu could make a Faustian pact with the kami of evil to somehow save the daughter's life. In return, "Jizonobu" becomes "Jei", the so-called Blade of the Gods. However, unlike Katsushige in SUMI-E, Jizonobu's motivation for selling his soul might be entirely selfless...a classic example of a ghastly evil committed in an effort to do good, which could possibly explain Jei's strange behavior. (He murders innocent people by the hundreds, but claims he's "cleansing" the world of evil.)
That does have the potential to explain Jei's mindset. Still, he does make Light Yagami look like Batman by comparison.
