Stan, can you give any hint of how many issues this story arc might contain?

I would bet three at least; although, given the importance Jei has aquired, I rather think four or even five; Three to introduce Jizonobu and the other members of that plot (Really a sub-plot to Usagi, but....) and the outcome, a kind of pre-Jei;
and maybe one or two to cover his wanderings from that day to his first encounter with Usagi.

Why three issues at least? Well, it's tragedy; every tragedy has three acts...

But that's just my guess...

Hey, we could make a wager...

Come on, Thomas, a good tragedy has always five acts. :)

Moreover, the action should take place over no more than 24 hours, in one single place, have only minimal subplots and describe plausible events. This last constraint is the hardest one, methinks.

Hmmm, you could be right with theatre; but I was thinking about the classical (Greek) tragedy, which had, well, three main parts, if you want:
Eleos, Phobos, and Katharsis

Moaning/compassion, Fear, and catharsis

Er, why "Oedipus" ? Is it that Jei wants to sleep with his mama ?
Hey, if we start talking about Freud on this forum, I'm leaving.

The "origin" story itself looks like it will be two issues.

I'm still not sure if I'll make this a full-blown Usagi/Gen/Stray Dog/etc story arc, or leave you dangling for awhile.

How much more dangling could we be???
the suspence is going to kill me one day....

Eleos, Phobos, Katharsis..... ....Oedipus???

No, no, don't get confused... The first three are the general "titles" of a classical Greek tragedy: The audiance knows the hero/es will die, that's how a tragedy goes.
Eleos, the first part, where the plot is presented and the audience feels compassion for the hero's predicament,

Phobos, the second part, where the plot developes and the audiance fears for and with the hero, hoping against all odds that he will survive somehow,

and Katharsis, the conclusion, the hero's fate is sealed, but with some kind of morale revelation for the audiance and/or other characters of the story....

Oedipus, on the other hand, is a character of Greek mythology, famous for being a victim of a tragic misinterpretation of a scrying; the whole story is a tragedy....

I'm kind of getting carried away... my line of thought is slowly dissolving... where was I?...where am I???..... and how many????....

Maybe I shouldn't post in the middle of the night...

Wow. You just looooooove watching us squirm, dontcha Stan?

I only brought Oedipus up because I've actually read the play, and it's actually just as potent a tragedy as it was all those centuries ago. Oedipus is a genuinely pitiable character...and let's face it, accidentally sleeping with your own Mom is the pits.

My prediction was right. Check out the comparison.

Is that from the actual comic or did you take a panel and add black hair to it?
Jei: Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh HEH!!
Me: Stop it! You're scaring me!

The four-page preview for #103 has been added over at www.darkhorse.com.

Is anybody else starting to notice the creepy parallels between Jei and Sanshobo?
