This is one of the sketchbooks which Stan Sakai has been putting together for fans over the last several years. They are 5.5' X 8.5' b/w sketchbooks with 24 pages of material which might include anything from misc. rough sketches, cover concept drawings, convention drawings, outlines, unpublished story fragments, alternate endings, new artwork, etc.

The Libro de Bocetos de Stan Sakai (the sketchbook which you posted the link to) was produced by Espiral Comunicacion in honor of Stan Sakai attending the VII Salon Internacional Del Tebeo De Madrid Expocomic in 2004. This publication is more like a cross between one of Stan's sketchbooks and one of the "Art of Usagi Yojimbo" publications from Radio Comix, but in trade paperback form. The title translates approximately as "The Book of Sketches of Stan Sakai" and it is both a fantastic publication and a great addition to any collection.

It should be added that Sensei has a lot of all these sketch books in his garage (except for Sketch book #1);

So, if you'd like to have one/some, keep looking at the forum for an offer rather than buying it on ebay.

Hello Hans. It is good to see you are still on the Boards. That cup you gave me in Paris--I use it regularly, almost daily.

I do still have a lot of copies of the Spanish sketchbook.

Hello Sensei. :D Yes, I am still on the boards, althought I do not write so frequently. I also try to keep in touch with Fanfan in Paris. If my holidays take me to France this year, I will poste him a note and see we could meet.

I am glad you really use the Documenta-cup, and I would appreciate if one copy the sketchbooks (the spanish one and No. 5) will find their way to Germany. :D

regards again

Well assuming there's a reasonable level of interest, I may well run a collection buying thread for San Diego as I will be going... to acquire things for people in Europe.

Reasonably high or low? :P

Well, on the last count I'd say there'd be at least four requests other than yours, Mayhem: Hans, Fanfan, and one for me and a friend of mine...

Oh I'm sure I can accommodate people heh... but yeah I'll probably start taking requests closer to the time :)

Just have to decide and find money for the commission I'd like to request too...

They've never been for commercial sale per se in comic shops, just through Sensei and the odd online site (Bud Plant etc).

How about stuff for folks on the other side of the country who simply can't make it this year? ;)

I'm sure someone who lives in the US might be able to help there... no point me doing it because the postage costs would be silly to ship them BACK to the US when I get home to England ;)
