Why should I "forget" it? It's one of my favorite Usagi stories (the expressions Usagi makes while telling the people in the inn of his experience with the Yokai is priceless).Ben wrote: Forget the whole "inn on moonshadow hill" incident; Usagi's up against the real deal this time.

Jacob Covey edits Beasts! over at Fantagraphics, so I asked him if he ran across that hopping foot during his research. Nope. But he did post it on the Fantagraphics website:
http://www.fantagraphics.com/index.php? ... Itemid=113
Let's see if we get responses.
I did find out a name, but nothing else. I can't even confirm the name. The internet is no help in this.

And the response I got is:
"The description says its name is Sanshou. It is a ようかい from China. The story:
A traveler was looking for a place to sleep in a mountain. Because he knew tigers live there, he decided to sleep on a tree. When he was climbing the tree, an eye of beast called サンショウ...
Unfortunately the story ends its halfway..."
Well, I tried. I guess I'll keep asking around if that didn't help.

Hmm... how to best express myself in signature form?
Well, I'm back. I need to get back into the series, been so long since I read volume 7.

Thank you. I knew it was Sansho, but the story is completely unrelated to the art. It tells about a traveler who climbed a tree because of the tigers in the area. A female obake appeared, and the man gave her items in his bag if she would let him spend the night in the tree. The man happened to be carrying cosmetics, so the she was overjoyed. When he was sleeping, a tiger appeared. The spirit told it to go away, and he did. In the morning, the man climbed down and went on his way.SakuradaKaoru wrote:And the response I got is:

I agree with Heidi McDonald: a "Do YOU know this beast?" poster with this image should be posted on every telephone pole:

I submitted links to the Fantagraphics blog entry to BoingBoing and a couple of other blogs, but I don't know if they'll pass along the link or not.

No luck, but maybe contacting Matt Alt to see if his book "Yokai Attack!" has it: http://www.amazon.com/Yokai-Attack-Japa ... 4770030703
His blog is here: http://altjapan.typepad.com/
He has a facebook group and I'll post a request for help on the group.
There is a very similar monster called Ippon -Datarar (but it has arms):

Sorry for the delay, got to go tomy parent's house, since we don't have anymore hot water in the appartment for one week.
So what say the article :
So what say the article :
from Yokai, dictionnaire des monstres japonais, Shigeru MizukiYou can see in the snow big footprint (30 cm) with only one foot... this came from Ippon Datara (Datara with one leg). He still lives in Kumano mounts in the Kishu area (Wakayama district). That is somekind of animal very close to human being, with one leg, one eye, as we often see with mountain yokai and earth goddess.
In China, in Guangdong mountain or Guanxi’s ones live a one leg yokai called Shanxio (sansho in Japanese). He looks like a moryo except he has one leg with 3 fingers, his heel is the wrong side, and it does exist both male and female that is quite rare among yokai. Male sansho are called Sanshong (sanko). When they meet human they ask them some money. Female one are called Shangu (sanko) and ask for lipstick or foundation cream.
A long time ago, in some mountain from south China, a traveller was going to sleep in a tree to be safe from tigers. That is where he met a Sanko (a she one) that asked him what he could offered her. He gave her lipstick and foundation cream, and satisfied, Sanko told him he would be safe. At midnight a tiger moved near the sleeping traveller that woke up scared…he was all of a shake… Sanko got down from the tree and told the tiger while she was blandish him : Let him quiet, he is my guest. And the tiger left the place. The day after in the morning, the traveller went back to his travel, Sanko hailed him politely. She was from the same family than Ippon Datara
