Eisner Awards

I've read a little bit of Monster (my university's library has the first two volumes), and I thought that it was good. Anyone who likes Tezuka's Black Jack or Ode To Kirihito (which I see as being sort of like an epic-length Black Jack story) should probably have a look at it. Of course, I still hope that Usagi wins the Eisner. "Hell on Earth" isn't my favorite Groo story ever (I tend to prefer the older one-shot stories over the minseries), but I'd still enjoy seeing Groo win an Eisner.

Sometime, I want to read Urasawa's more recent series Pluto, which is a loose remake of a famous Astro Boy story (you can read it in the third Dark Horse Astro Boy volume).

It is out over here and it is really good. But Urasawa's best series is not Monster, it is the series he did after Monster, 20th Century Boys. That series makes Monster look predictable. But you can read them all online, btw.

Sadly I am pissed at the Eisnor nomination people cause I want Usagi to win and I feel they stuck Monster up against it and three other major ongoing US series figuring it will lose and they wont have to award a Japanese comic anything. What is it with the American comic and literary community and their disapproval of Japanese comics. Granted it can be annoying that Bleach and Naruto are so popular, but you can not condone the whole genera for a few main stream series aimed at the masses of fans, no more then you can condemn all American comic art because of Marvel and DC being the heavy hitters.

Seriously, Monster should have been nominated in mini series. If you wanted ongoing Japanese comics then look to One Pieces, Naruto, Bleach, or Kekkaishi. They are the ones that come to my mind when i hear ongoing series.

Aw man! All Star Superman? If those weird judges think it's actually better than Usagi, I might have to check it out. I'm Usagi all the way, though. Sorry Sakai Sensei, judges have weird opinions...

That's too bad that Usagi didn't win this time. However, it's nice to see Hellboy and Tezuka's Dororo win awards. Also, Groo co-writer Mark Evanier got one for his Jack Kirby book.

Sad that Stan didn't win, happy that Art Baltazar won; he works with the brother of a mate of mine (both of whom I've met here at SDCC) so it was nice to see him win

As far as I'm concerned, Usagi Yojimbo should have won! It is, far and away, the Best Continuing Series being produced hands down!

So, here is to Stan Sakai and Usagi Yojimbo, the true (if unofficial) winner of the 2009 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series!

Thanks for the link to the winners.

What little I read of All-Star Superman was very good, but since it ended with issue 12 giving it this award is at the very least questionable.

Calling Iron Man a new series is vaguely silly as well. They just went back to # 1 with a new creative team.

These things will never be perfect though.

Can't say I'm surprised at all, there are always clear favorites at the Eisners who will win every time they're up. James Jean has won Best Cover Artist for the last 7 or 8 years straight.
