In the Usagi Cover Art thread, Mr. Sakai mentioned an appearance in January out here at Cal Poly Pomona.

It's a bit of a drive out to the Hawthorne signing, so I was wondering if anyone had any details on when exactly the January appearance will be?

I don't think this one is open to the public. I will check on this. I will be part of a manga symposium with Fred Schodt and others for the Dept of Language & Literature held on Feb 17. I was told the room only seats 100.

Manga!: The World of Japanese Comics and Dreamland Japan: Writings on Modern Manga. Also featured will be Stan Sakai, the creator of the long running and highly successful samurai rabbit Usagi Yojimbo series, providing a step-by-step demonstration of how a manga story is written and drawn. Kinko Ito, professor of sociology at the University of Arkansas, will speak to the genre of ladies comics, its emergence in the 1980s to its newest trends in the 21st century. Matthew A. Thorn, associate professor at Japan’s only Department of Comic Art in the School of Cartoon and Comic Art at Kyoto Seika University and an expert on girls shôjo manga, will round out the program.

The symposium went very well. It was good to see Fred Schodt again. He was our translator when Sharon and I went to Japan as guests of Tezuka. It was also nice to meet Matt Thorn, a professor of manga at a university in Kyoto, and Kinko Ito, a university professor from Arkansas and manga author.

We were taken out for a very nice Afghan lunch, and a buffet dinner of Hawaiian and Chinese food was provided.

I used a document camera for the first time during my presentation, and I loved using it. I could draw on a piece of paper, and it would be projected up on the wall--much easier than drawing on an easel, and the fairly large room could see what I was doing with no problem. The document camera could also project visuals of my script, thumbnails, and original art.

Unfortunately, it's been a warm, dry month and my allergies are still in full bloom--watery eyes, sniffly nose, scratchy throat--so I was drinking water and sucking on cough drops like there was no tomorrow. It rained last night, so hopefully the pollen count will be lowered a lot. This is the worst year for my allergies ever.

I'll be doing a presentation for Cynlee's class next week.

I was looking at te iCon Convention in Stony Brook and it says you will be appearing there. is that True? It would be a great honor to meet the creator of Usagi.

Yes, I will be at I-Con next weekend. It will be a very short trip for me--flying in Friday evening, and back to LA Sunday night.

I won't have a dealer table there--so if there is anything you would like me to bring--a particular issue to complete your collection, finger puppet, etc--let me know. Either e-mail me or post it here.

Hi Stan, just wondering when you say that you wont have a dealer table does that mean you wont be selling any original artwork or doing any sketches?

I was told that I'll be sharing part of Hal Holbrook's (?) table in the dealers' room for sketches and autographs. But if you see me around, I'm usually happy to do something for you. As I've said in the past, if you want a free sketch, I ask that you supply your own paper, it must be personalized to someone, and I do not take requests for particular characters.

I will be doing a few presentation at about noon on Saturday and Sunday.

I guess I'll bring a few drawings with me, as well.

I'll be traveling light, so if there are any books, comics, a calendar, Art of UY, etc that you want me to bring, let me know.

Thanks for the reply Stan, Actually I was looking foward to purchasing some Usagi original covers like the ones you brought to Anthrocon in Philly. Also, if its possible a more detailed personalized sketch that I would be willing to pay for. One last thing I will be coming on Saturday, do you know a good time to catch you at the table. Thanks.
