= It includes UY Color special from Fantagraphics and 90-93 Dark Horse UY's, "Tomoe's Story" was re-drawed for this book..
It includes three Usagi stories which were originally published in the Usagi Yojimbo Color Specials #1 -3 (1989, 1991, 1992), but all three stories are reprinted in black and white, with the artwork touched up to compensate for the lack of color, and with Tomoe's Story completely redrawn.
If you want to see those stories in color, you would still need to find copies of the original Color Specials.
Steve/Stan - when Stan redraws a story, does it look pretty much like the original? i.e. same characters, same dialogue, same panels, etc.? Or is it changed? I'm curious why they would be redrawn.
This was rather different, aside from naturally a different style as Sensei has evolved over the 25 years. Why the redraw? I'm sure someone will correct my failing memory but I think the originals went AWOL for the rescanning and transition into b/w for the h/c.
With a breeze comes a storm, but then you'll all be washed away...
Mayhem is correct. Tomoe's Story was originally printed in UY Color Special #1, almost 20 years ago. I always said that that story takes place in Usagi's future, and it will be reprinted in a trade when we reach that point in Usagi's life. Originally, I thought it would be in Book 11 or 12, then it became 17 or 18. When it was time to print that story in Book 22, I could not find the original art, and Fantagraphics, the original publisher, had changed printers a number of times and the film negatives had been destroyed. I always make photocopies of my art before I send them in, but I could not find the copies either. It only existed as color pages.
We had two options: 1) Bleach the color pages with the computer--basically, remove all the color and tones and leave the b/w line art, or 2) Redo the art. The problem with bleaching is that it is a long process, and the line work will not look as crisp and clean as the original. The problem with redoing the art is that it is an even longer process, for which I won't get paid. I chose to redo the art, and Diana did manage to get me a token payment.
Each page has some changes, from slightly changing a composition to redoing the page completely. It was a learning experience for me to see how I had changed as an artist, and how Usagi had changed as a character, in the last 20 years. One really obvious change, is the addition of a cameo by Tomoe's cousin Noriko, a character that was not around when the story was originally published.

Glad you got something for all that work. Seeing the reworking of an earlier story was really something I / many UY fans enjoyed, if that is any consolation.
