Will Eisner passed away last night (1/3) because of complications from heart surgery. He was 87 years old.

Will was the creator of The Spirit, and a pioneer of the graphic novel format. And, as far as I'm concerned, he was the best practitioner of the medium. The most prestigious of the American comic book awards, the Eisners, is named after him. I was fortunate to receive three Eisners, and was honored to receive them from Will himself. The last one was for Best Serialized Story for Grasscutter. Will had written the introduction for the trade collection.

He will be sadly missed, but his work will definitely live on!

Cheers

I always tell myself that I should read "The Spirit" someday, but I never do. I guess I will have to eventually.

A pity. May he rest in peace.

It's amazing that someone who was active in the very early years of the comics industry is just now passing away. I read somewhere today that Jack Kirby worked for Eisner for a time.

Has anyone noticed that a lot of artists live to their late 80s, and even 90s, and sometimes beyond! I'm thinking about Picasso, Joan Miro, and many others. Maybe its because they just have to live to make that next creation?
