Usagi Yojimbo DojoBoard

I sent off the story for UY 99 to Diana today. I did an alternate ending, that will affect UY 101. I'll let Diana decide which one to use. When that issue comes out, we'll post the unused ending somewhere in the Dojo.

This is not the first time that I did an alternate ending. If you remember Lone Rabbit & Child (reprinted in Book 1), Usagi saves Lord Noriyuki then leaves the Geishu province without saying good-bye to Tomoe. In another version, he leaves behind a parting gift--a mirror. There is a saying that, "The sword is the soul of a samurai, and the mirror is the soul of a woman." This was a bit of foreshadowing of their relationship. In still another version, Usagi does not leave at all. The story ends with Usagi and Tomoe having their promised duel with wooden swords. The story ends just as they're attacking each other, however. The two alternate endings were pencilled, but never inked.

I'm not usually a gambling person, but I'm gonna bet my left arm that Jei's involved in these "mystery endings".

Any chance of those penciled pages making it into a TPB?

It's sort of strange, how quiet this thread has been. Personally, I love the idea of different endings being considered, and how they're all revolving around issue #100...it means a lot of big things are about to happen, and to me that's exciting.

Interesting to hear about the alternate endings to LONE RABBIT & CHILD. You can't help but wonder how differently the series might have developed if Usagi had become one of Noriyuki's retainers.

I also liked the idea about a mirror as a gift. Mirrors seem to figure into Japanese mythology a lot, in good and bad aspects. Mirrors also reveal the true nature of many malevolent spirits, if I remember right.

Diana has made her choice, but she also gave me an extra page to give the story a proper resolution. So UY 99 will have 25 pages, instead of 24. There will be no letters page that issue.

Okay now I'm REALLY nervous for Chizu.
