According to Stan, the gargoyle-like beasts are "komainu"--stone dogs that guard a shinto temple. They (though not animated ones) played an important role in the story "Komainu" which guest starred Kitsune the thief.

Very nice.

Thanks for the review, estee.

I hope you'll like part 3 as well. It's pretty much all action.

This 3-issue story has really been a hoot so far, and I’m kind of sorry it didn’t turn out to be a 4 or 5-parter given the fun, frenzied, pace it’s moving at...

The rest of my review is up at Duckburg (see sig) as I celebrate "Usagi Week" there in anticipation of Saturday's STAPLE! Expo.

Is it my imagination, or is Hatakeyama one of the creepiest-looking characters Stan has ever drawn? Practicing black magic obviously isn't good for your personal health.

We don't need zombies next issue; Hatakeyama is already half-zombie!

I just read this issue last night and it was fantastic. I don't think there is a single issue of this comic that I haven't enjoyed.

Yea, I thought the very same thing. It looks like he'd just as soon devour you as enlist your services. Neither of which ends well...and the fact that he can fly across the countryside, seemingly aware of your movements, doesn't much help matters!
