2009 Comic-Con Souvenir Book!
Art and article submissions now being accepted

http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_progbk.shtml
Each year, Comic-Con produces a special Souvenir Book that commemorates the event. Last year’s book, with an Alex Ross cover celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Legion of Super-Heroes, was a huge trade paperback featuring bios of all of the guests, plus special articles and art created in tribute to Comic-Con’s themes and anniversary celebrations. Best of all, the Souvenir Book is given free to all attendees (while supplies last), along with the separate show schedule magazine, the Events Guide.
The big news this year is that the Souvenir Book is switching to FULL COLOR. That’s right, we said color, and we shouted it in all caps! And once again, as part of this amazing book, Comic-Con is soliciting articles and artwork from professionals and fans alike, based on the anniversaries and themes Comic-Con is celebrating this year. This is your opportunity to submit something for consideration in the book.

The deadline for contributions is April 20, 2009.
With the upgrade to color, we’re happy to announce we will be accepting color art for consideration for the first time. For complete information on how to contribute, including file formats and technical information, please see the information below.

Themes and Anniversaries (amoung others)
Each year, Comic-Con celebrates a number of anniversaries and topics as special themes. Some of these special celebrations are a part of the event’s program schedule, while others are oriented toward tribute articles and art in the Souvenir Book. In 2009, Comic-Con marks the following special themes and anniversaries:

• 25th Anniversary of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
It’s hard to believe that it was 25 years ago that Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman created Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Besides becoming a pop culture phenomenon in and of themselves (with movies, animated TV shows, toys, and merchandise in addition to the comics), the Turtles spawned a revolution in comics self-publishing. Now, 25 years later, it’s apparent these Turtles will live forever!

• 25th Anniversary of Usagi Yojimbo
Three-time Eisner Award–winner Stan Sakai has kept comic fans enthralled for 25 years with his tales of Usagi Yojimbo. Sakai’s rabbit ronin travels the countryside of Japan circa 17th century, encountering a variety of memorable characters, battling ninjas and samurai, and even going up against the supernatural. Don’t let the “funny animal” trappings fool you: Usagi is all warrior. With over 120 issues and more than 20 collections in print, Usagi appeals to readers of all ages.

Guidelines for submitting articles and art:
1. We are now accepting COLOR art! For color art submissions, we prefer an electronic file to ensure your art maintains the color look you intended.

2. If you’re not sending an electronic file, send only high-quality scans, photocopies or stats—DO NOT SEND YOUR ORIGINAL ART. Please print your name—as you would like it to appear in the Souvenir Book—on the back of your submission. If you’re sending an electronic image, it should a 300dpi color (CMYK) or grayscale TIF, JPG, or PDF file. If it’s a TIF file, please make sure all layers are flattened. If it’s a PDF file, embed all fonts.

3. Artwork should be no larger than 8 1/2 x 11".

4. It is your responsibility to list on your art any appropriate copyright notices. Be sure to include the copyright and trademark notices of other people's characters as well as your own.

5. Articles must relate to the above-mentioned themes and anniversaries and should be no more than 1,000-1,500 words. Please send articles on a CD or e-mail them to cci-info@comic-con.org in a text format such as Word (.doc or .rtf formats preferred). If sending via e-mail, please put “CCI Souvenir Book Submission” in the subject line. If mailing, please include a double-spaced printed copy.

6. The Souvenir Book is given free to all attendees (while supplies last) and is intended for a general audience. No nudity or profanity will be accepted.

7. Artwork that is essentially an “ad” for a character or company will not be accepted. (Example: “UltraPower Comics congratulates Comic-Con and invites everyone to stop by our booth!”)

8. It’s okay to sign your work, but please do not include website addresses or personal e-mail addresses on any piece of art; doing so will immediately disqualify your art from being considered.

9. Send electronic files (under 5.0 MB) to cci-info@comic-con.org. Please put “CCI Souvenir Book Submission” in the subject line. If you’re e-mailing your art submission, we recommend you utilize the PDF format.

10. If your submission is over 5.0 MB in size, please mail it on a non-returnable CD (must be postmarked by April 20, 2008) to:

Yes, Usagi's and the TMNT's silver anniversaries will be themes for this year's souvenir book. I did not know about the color, though. I was planning on doing an Usagi/TMNT drawing. Now, I guess I can do it as a watercolor painting.

Though it has not been officially announced yet, I will be one of the con's special guests. I was waiting until the con sent out the updated guest list, but it's pretty obvious if Usagi is one of the themes.

If we're not going to the con, do you know if there's any way to get one of these books?

I thought that was the case but I thought I would wait to hear it here first. Congratulations! That means free accommodations for you and your family, right? 8)

I hope I can make it to the Usagi break out sessions. As I posted elsewhere on the Dojo, my checkout for our condo rental ends on Saturday. Is there any chance of members of Dojo getting together Thursday or Friday night for a meal and fellowship?

Also maybe this should be another thread but . . . do any of your SDCC returners have any must see at the con? This will be my first SDCC and I would love to hear what you experienced people recommend.

Peace, maka

I'm having a hard time. I want to submit an article, but there's TMNT, and of course Usagi-- and then there's the Convention itself. I guess I'll try three articles and submit them all-- nothing like getting three strikes in a row!

:D

Must see? Dang, I'll have to think on that, but if you can get into the Sergio Aragones panel, or anything with Stan-- it's getting harder and harder to do panels, they start lining people up hours in advance for some of them. I hate that so much.

OH and you must come by Stan's booth-- and be in the dojo picture, that's an absolute MUST!

No promises, but I could try to get you one-- they're handed out to the people who attend. I'm sure someone here might get an extra, and I will try to as well.

Yes, I plan on being at Comic-con from opening of Preview Night on Wednesday to con's end at 5 PM Sunday. I will have a booth there will books, art, and other stuff. And, about a month before the con, there will be a thread where people can post special requests for things they want me to bring, such as a particular issue, a hardcover, art commission, etc.
