The Art of Usagi

Post by Stan Sakai »

I was sent the mock-up of the Art of UY book from Dark Horse, and it looks terrific.

It will reprint for the first time, The Return to Adachi Plain and The Guardian. These stories were both painted in water colors--Return was first printed in the UY Book 4 HC, and Guardian in the Trilogy 2 book. Return was the first time I used watercolors, and the difference in technique between the two stories is striking. Many of my paintings will be in there--including the original cover to Book 3, the upcoming cover to Book 19, and the poster art for ExpoComic in Madrid.

It will, of course, also have the "How I create an Usagi story" 12-pager, and a short on the creative process that ran in The Comics Journal.

It will be a 200 page HC, scheduled for December, priced at about $40 US.

It will be about 9 x 12 inches--much larger than the usual Usagi books.

You mean the short story that ran in the Comics Journal Winter Special a few years ago? I still have not found / bought a copy of that or read the piece you did in it. Now, I'll have my chance...

The Art of Usagi has gone to the printer, but, unfortunately, it did so without Stan Lee's introduction. We were behind schedule as it is, and could not wait any longer. Editor Diana filled in with a wonderful intro.

The book is still scheduled for an early December release.

Look forward to it :)

One of those two stories you mentioned Stan I think is the only thing Usagi I'm missing in my collection; can't remember which though, have to check. Whichever one was only previously available in a hardcover collection.

Should I ask my comic shop here in the UK to order one in from December, or go directly through Dark Horse?

Can Stan Lee soon look forward to a threatening visit from a Neko ninja in the middle of the night, then?

Maybe you can use Stan's interview in the next UY collected book?

I received some advance copies of the book, and it looks terrific--better than my expectations, and I really had some high expectations for this book. Cary Grazzini really outdid himself with the design. I know I'm really biased, but this is the best of Dark Horse's "Art of--" books.

We're still hoping for a late December release date, so don't run off to the stores yet.

Wait till you see Geoff Darrow's Usagi, and Jeff Smith's Gen.

The artists featured in the Gallery section are: Sergio Aragones, Paul Chadwick, Geoff Darrow, Peter Laird, Frank Miller, Tim Sale, Jeff Smith, William Stout, Matt Wagner, and Andi Watson.

I wish I could post some of the other drawings that artists have given me. Sergio did a neat Usagi sketch just the last week.

That would be cool to see. I love to see other artist's take on established characters.

Does anyone remember a few years ago on April Fools Day when many of the comic strip artists did a "Switcheroo"? Scott Adams of Dilbert and Bil Keane of Family Circus traded strips for the day, etc. It was a riot. I wish they would do it every April 1.
