Rash of spammer registrations?

Posted: Sun Dec 18, 2005 18:42 -0700

Is appears that approximately 45 of the last 70 registrations on the Dojo memberlist have been spammers with web-site links to inappropriate pages, including gambling related or porn sites.

Is there any way to delete these registrations and install some sort of a text recognition step in the registration process (or something os a similar nature / purpose) to deter this flood of unwanted and potentially malicous spammers?

Okay, most of these users have been banned, albeit only by username. If necessary, emails and IP ranges will be banned as well.

And sorry about not catching that before :P .

Okay, l'm an admin n00b, and I've noticed that banning those users won't make their profiles go away. I'll look into that later today.

Best not to delete the user accounts though, they'll only get redone at a later date. Just ban them (it's the policy followed at a few other places I go to).

I thought Digulla updated the security of the board???

He did... nothing can really stop this sort of thing however on phpbb to my knowledge. People write scripts to sign up new users and so on... you just ban the accounts and leave them there.

Can't you have one of those "Match the characters you see" boxes when attemping to join the DojoBoard? This way someone has to type in the letters and numbers they see before being approved.

That would be cool but I don't think phpBB supports this feature at the moment??

You raise a good point about keeping the spammers there and just banning them. I was deleting the Spam Bots entirely... I suppose keeping them there and banned prevents them from posting as well as re-creating their user ID's since they are technically still there. I wonder how long it will take them before they can detect if they've been banned or not to start re-registering.

The sad part is there are conscious minds at work behind all of this. Unscrupulous people who'll do whatever it takes to make a buck by spreading their unwanted virus advertisements all over the place like the plague. I cant wait for the day when we'll be able to surf a spam-free Internet!!

Thanks Fanfan. That is what I was trying to ask about when I started this thread. I hope it can be incorporated into the Dojo forum and at least limit somewhat the amount of spammer registrations.
