What is Usagi Yojimbo Role-Playing Game?
Based on Stan Sakai's Eisner-award winning comic-book series, USAGI YOJIMBO: Fantasy Role-Play is a stand-alone game set in a fantastic version of Tokugawa-era Japan. While the warring states have been brought to peace under the watchful eyes of the Shogunate, danger still abounds in the form of greedy bandits, scheming warlords, and even the supernatural. But a house that heaps evil upon evil cannot stand ...
Players take on the roles of brave samurai warriors, clever schemers, wise priests, and other heroes as they battle against the forces of corruption, despair, and evil in Sakai's fantastic blend of historical and fantastical Japan. More that a source-book for the Usagi characters and stories, this game stands apart as a combination of story-telling and role-playing -- where players work together to craft tales of heroism and drama. A unique system combines simple rules for complex results -- even allowing characters to trade old abilities for new ones as the world changes with them. Play along side Usagi, Tomoe, Gennosuke as they fight Lord Hikiji and his minions ... or create whole new stories of your own.
When will Usagi be available for sale?
Sanguine's Usagi game has had a limited-edition release at Anthrocon on July 7, 2005. Some copies are still avaiable from Sanguine Productions. The general release is scheduled for August 1, 2005.
What is the Usagi Yojimbo comic book?
Stan Sakai's first Usagi Yojimbo story was published in 1984: a story about a rabbit samurai forced to wander as a masterless ronin when his lord falls in battle, betrayed by his former allies. More than twenty years later, Usagi has won two Eisner-Awards and continues to be a fan favorite. You can visit the official website at http://www.usagiyojimbo.com/ .
What is Sanguine Productions?
Sanguine is the acclaimed producer of Ironclaw, Jadeclaw, and Albedo role-playing games. You can visit their official Usagi RPG website at http://www.sanguine.com/usagi .
Isn't there an earlier edition of UYrpg?
An earlier edition of Usagi RPG was published by Gold Rush Games. The Sanguine edition is a different game. A conversion guide for transferring Gold Rush edition characters to Sanguine's edition will be available on the Sanguine website.
What's the difference among Ironclaw, Jadeclaw, and Usagi?
UYrpg has rules not unlike Sanguine's acclaimed Ironclaw and Jadeclaw games, but with some key differences:
UYrpg's initiative system is greatly simplified, which speeds play.
In Ironclaw and Jadeclaw, the key defense is the Parry, which prevents an attack. In UYrpg, the key defense is the Counter-Attack, which allows characters to strike down foes even when it's not their turn. Battles against dozens of foes resolve much more quickly -- as per the Usagi comic book.
UYrpg uses twenty-sided dice for Damage Dice, and other polyhedrals for Skill Dice. This division keeps dice from getting mixed up and speeds play.
UYrpg adds many more special abilities for fighting, for leading, and for socializing. Most importantly, characters learn special abilities that allow them to avoid certain kinds of damage in certain kinds of circumstances. Instead of piling on more and more hit points, better fighters look to create circumstances where they can use their abilities to keep from getting hurt.
Fans of Ironclaw and Jadeclaw should be able to pick up UYrpg very easily, finding a lot of what they already know with some key innovations that make for more action and less book-keeping.
Are there supplements planned?
Sanguine plans to fully support UYrpg. Watch our website for more details, or you can join the UYrpg mailing list.

I can't wait
Being a gamer for almost as long as I have been a comic fan, I can't wait for this. I own the original RPG as well, but there just wasn't enough crunch in it for me.
I ordered my copy already from Sanguine and I can't wait for it to get here.

I got mine at San D Con!
A quick peek through it looks pretty cool. Nice layout, great art of course!, good background and historical info, comprehensive rules.
I have had overtime at work since I got home, and with things to do like unpack yet, I haven't had time to really dig into it. I'll post more comments when I do.

As far as I know, the differences are merely cosmetic (appearance only). The limited has a wrap-around cover different from the mass market one, and it is also paperback rather than the hardcover general. It is also less expensive, though I do not know by how much.blackjack wrote:Sorry for the bump, but I was wondering what's different between the limited edition release of the RPG and the general release? The Sanguine website didn't seem to specify.

I don't think it is, but expect the general release edition to be available any time soon.MikeM wrote:Is the general release available for sale yet?

Also, the limit edition softcover was limited to about 100 copies.
