A Maybe 6 years ago I bought the UY book 4 hard cover on eBay. But my copy wasn't signed by Mr. Sakai. It says first fantagraphics book edition: 1990. So are there two versions of this book produced (signed and unsigned)?
On a happy note, this past fall, I had Mr. Sakai sign it to my daughter Angela at the Monterey Park / HS gig.
Angela is checking out the original art (20th anniversary SDCC page). Cami was a little scared, So I was holding her (the picture was supposed to be just Angela and Mr. Sakai, but the 2 year old wanted in on the action too. Mr. Sakai acted like a father who had two kids of his own [he smiled and waited]).
For those interested, I saw this signed copy of book 4 on eBay:
There was only one printing of the hardcovers. For an edition of 1500, I probably signed/drew 1650 tip-in plates. This would be enough to cover the numbered edition, artist proofs, publishers proofs, and to make up any damaged plates or books.
The printer usually prints about 10% over the amount of books ordered. This would make up for any misprints or damages. I suspect you bought one of the overprint. It could have originated from the printer or the publisher.
Same thing happened to me, I got a Hardcover Edition of Book 7 unsigned direct from Fanagraphics. However I had Stan sign it for me in I think the 1998 Wizard World Chicago Con, I think Stan even remarked on that it wasn't signed as he signed and put a sketch on the title page for me.
