Be sure to read the descriptions carefully. I noticed the seller refers to them all as the signed and numbered limited editions, but for some, if you read on, they don't have the number card, signature, etc.

I think it's a bit shady to call it the signed and numbered edition up front, only to mention further down that this particular volume doesn't retain the signature or numbering. So, just be careful to read thoroughly.

Book 7: Gen's Story was the only one listed without a signature plate in it, as far as I could find, and it is not listed as being s/n.....

That's the item title I guess? Maybe it was just the one. But I think if you look in that item description, it starts off talking about the rarity of the signed and numbered editions, and then tells you afterwards that this one doesn't have the signature or number. Or perhaps he's edited them?

Whatever it was, I found it a bit misleading (or at least confusing) when I read it the first time. So, read closely the descriptions closely fellow dojo members, and avoid buyer's remorse. :)

I believe (but could be wrong) that Book 5 was the only HC offered for sale without a s/n signature plate.

The copy up for sale probably had a signature plate originally and it was improperly glued in and fell out, possibly removed deliberately, or maybe just got missed in the initial process of having one inserted. :D

Oh, he might have changed the description as well. I did not look that closely at any of the individual auctions when I initially posted the link.

Beats me. I just figure it was worth mentioning to give everyone the heads up. I know that when I see something I'm eager to see, I sometimes don't catch all the details right away. :)

I was surprised to see the Lone Goat and Kid volume went for a lot more than the Dragon Bellow Conspiracy. I thought Book 4 was the tricky one.

There are 1,500 copies (or thereabouts) of book #4, it's actually one of the "commonest" hardcovers, although the price holds, partly due to it being the oldest, and has the watercolour plates in it. It still has demand. I'd say having gotten all of them myself that #3 and #12 are the hardest to get hold of and perhaps two of the most expensive.

Interesting, but what do you mean by the oldest? Was four the first one for which they did a signed and numbered limited edition HC?

#4 was the first HC released, then Fantagraphics went back and released hardcovers for 1 -3 afterwards. With the release of the Art of Usagi Yojimbo coffee table book which reprinted the Return to Adachigahara water-color story, I think some of the demand for copies of the Book 4 hardcover went down.

Wow. Books 4-11 went for a healthy sum of money. I very recently sold copies of Books 4 and 5 for less than they went for in this auction. MUCH less, in the case of Book 5.

Book 4 was the first volume that had a hard cover edition. We had anticipated maybe a couple hundred orders, so I suggested I do an original drawing for each one, and that watercolor story. The orders came in for 1,500 books. It took me a full three weeks of non-stop drawing to do those signature plates. Now we limit the number of copies of each HC to 350, plus author and publisher proofs. I'll do a sketch in each book, but nothing like the ones in the first volumes.

When Books 1-3 trades went back to press for a second printing, we also did hard cover editions. That is why those HCs are indicated as second printings in the indicia.

What did Book 5 end up going for? I sold my copy last month for like $50.

About a month ago you could have had the entire set for $1250.00. That's a steal. Don't know how I missed it.
