First post, first horrid attempt at fan art..

Hey. First time poster. Long time fan. Here is a very rough pencil I did the other night of series 3, issue 7 cover. I am NOT AN ARTISTE. Just fiddling with copying covers and stuff for fun. I find it oddly therapeutic.

I'm working on another cover which is going rather well. I have NOT tried inking yet, which seems to be another obstacle all-together ; but I will eventually.

Hello Lubidius,
Welcome to the Dojo! I think your cover re-draw is good! Look forward to seeing more.
peace, maka
Thanks for encouragement.

I think I need to go through about 100 re-draws before I attempt an 'original' depiction. Also, inking, I have no idea how to do properly ; especially color wise if I ever go that route. When I get to that point, I may ask around here for specific pointers. Stan's work is sublime. I liked it as a teen in the 80s (first was into Mirage's TMNT comics, then turned on to Usagi), but now I am falling for it all over again. Wonderful works of art! I really don't know why, but sitting down and copying a cover or frame is strangely therapeutic. There is just something soothing about looking at something that is so nice, and ATTEMPTING to mimic. It is satisfying trying to finish it.
A new attempt.

This is from a penciled sketch. I then took digital photo at high res, and used some auto color-balancing in google's picasa web editing tool:

To magnify to original size (and see closer up), click the small magnifying glass near top right area of picture.
It is only a piece of the cover. I may finish it out, or move on to another.
Just a rough sketch. About 15 minutes work.
Ok, I'll stop jabbering now... Will post in a couple weeks after I get some full drawings done.
Nearly final version.

Some touch-up is needed here and there, but here is the continued drawing, taken as high resolution photo, then futzed with with autocolor and other gadgets to give it an inky look. Not bad, but nothing to write home about.

See you all in a while, I'm going to get a few more under my belt before posting again.

Usagi and all related characters belong to Stan Sakai.
Starting to finally take some art classes.

Ok. So I'm mediocre at best, but I've been enjoying taking a local art class through our county's parks and recreations:

and my previous Yojimbo sketches. I am not going to try any more (or original fan art) until I complete the courses I am taking.

Eventually, I will be drawing my own graphic novels. I'm writing an RPG and will be doing my own pen and ink drawings there-in. I hope to move on to water colors to spruce up my rpg cover as well. My RPG will be described here in case anyone has a desire to follow along while I design it -

The name of the rpg is a working title for now. The actual draft layout of the rpg is linked on top right.
As (and IF) I continue to improve, I will definitely be offering some Usagi fan art.

Thanks. That was literally one of my first pen and ink over pencil sketch. Also, credit where it's due, it's a mimic from a Stan panel. (as well as the others). I hope eventually to do line art, pen and ink, then water colors, and eventually original fan art of course. I enjoyed our class recently doing charcoal drawings, so I may do a few charcoals and pastels for something a little different fan art wise.
