Review: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck

I just finished reading Don Rosa's Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck GN to my daughters. The 7 year old loved it. It managed to keep the 4 year old's attention most of the time, but she did wander off once or twice during the story. I read them a chapter a night.

The story: Starts when Scrooge was a dirt poor boy in Scottland and follows him all over the globe as he develops his life lessons that help him become the world's richest duck. It introduces major characters (Like Beagle Boys and Donald Duck) and the McDuck family tree. Supposedly Mr. Rosa takes from Carl Bark's Scrooge stories and reintroduces them in this 12 chapter maxi-series. I haven't read all the Bark's stories, but that didn't stop us from enjoying this top notch epic tale.

I wasn't famillar with Don Rosa's art before this. The story was great, but the art was out of this world. His facial expressions are so funny and the details, including the backgrounds, are so defined and stylistic that it like a fun puzzle to pour over every panel for hidden gems.

I had quite a few Carl Bark's books that my family enjoyed tremedously. Mr. Rosa's art is much more detailed. Different styles but still great funny stories.

I really recommend it for those of you who like duck tales and fun adventure comics.

I've been acquainted with Don for about 20 years--not friends, but a few words at conventions. I really enjoy his work. I've got a few of his cover roughs. His working methods are truly unique.

He is very underappreciated in the US, but his popularity in Europe has almost reach the proportions of sainthood.

To say that he's dedicated to Scrooge and Barks is an understatement. There is already a "sequel" to Life and Times, that fills in some of the gaps.

Oh yea, i remember duck tales! That was a great cartoon! Have they ever made a duck tales comic book before? Also, i've seen some donald duck comics at this one comic book store that i go to, but i dont know if its the same comic your talking about.
