Gotham Knight

Post by Jet_Jaguar »

Has anyone seen this collection of animated Batman short films made by anime directors? It looks like it would probably be worth a rental. I liked the Animatrix a lot, so I think that doing something similar with Batman is a cool idea. I wish that some of the same directors had worked on Gotham Knight; in particular, I'd love to see a Batman short film by Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo). I haven't heard of any of the directors who worked on Gotham Knight. One of them might be a protege of Yoshiyaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, Wicked City) since one of the episodes has a somewhat similar style of character design, which, truth be told, I'm not a great fan of (While we're on the subject, If you want to laugh yourself silly, listen to Anime World Order's review [actually more of a summary] of Wicked City [but only if you're 18 or older and not easily offended]. It's one of the funniest things that I've ever listened to: http://animeworldorder.blogspot.com/200 ... tting.html ).

I watched it the other night. Definitely worth a rental. They have it at some stores (Best Buy and Target) for 12.99 if you wanna go that way as well. It is 70 minutes long with 6 shorts stories and 6 distinctive styles of animation. Unless you are a batman fanatic or a fan of one of the animators, I think renting it would be a viable option.

disc 2 possible spoilers.....

Dear Readers,
possible spoillers.......

Disc 2 has 2 things you may enjoy.
There is a "Revealing Documentary" titled Batman and Me: The Bob Kane Story.
A good biography, including his connections with DaVinci and Douglas Fairbanks, his "affair" with Marylin Monroe and his humble beginnings.
The real gem for me was one of the 4 "Bonus" Batman the Animated Series cartoons. 3 young people are describing their sense of Batman. One says they are all wrong, Robin is a girl and Batman is old! For a few minutes we get to see Frank Miller's vision on the screen. The animation is not great but the energy of Miller's Batman is totally there. My jaw dropped! I am so looking forward to Miller's version on the big screen. His work is gimungous!
My opinion to you big Batman fans is spend the extra cash if you have it for the 2 disc edition.
Have fun!
Best wishes too all.
