:? I am having a problem coming up with a question for my research paper on Stan Sakai. The class is ART 5250: Asia/Pacific Art History. Anyone out there that could help me, it would be most appreciated.

Hello VanceHarris,

That's a broad topic that could go in many different directions.

One question could be, "Why does Stan Sakai use anthropomorphic animals to tell/retell/create mythology from the Japanese Edo (17th century) period?"

It would be fun to post your paper here once you are done with it. :)

Peace, maka

Another possible question could be "Why publish the stories in b/w instead of the more common color format?" which would allow visuals to be included in the paper comparing b/w, color, and painted artwork.

I'm not sure how helpful it will be for your paper, but one book on comics that I would really recommend if you haven't read it already is Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, which is pretty close to being my favorite book. McCloud does a really good job of exploring how comics work without getting too bogged down in theory. IIRC, Groo and UY show up in it briefly.

I would say, what influence does the stories, mythology, fables and history of the region have on the stories. What aspects of the work are influenced by contemporary situations.
