Blacksad

Post by Maka »

Hello UYDers,

Today, I sat down and opened up Dark Horse Books presents reprint of "Blacksad" by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido. I knew nothing of this book. I ask my LCBS to put it in my pull after seeing it in the Dark Horse SDCC signature book and based on recommendations on this board.

The back covers says Guarnido is a former Disney artist. His paintings here are so full of detail and feel like we are looking at storeboards for a noir film. Low angle, bird's eye, dutch tilts, close ups, cowboy shots with his colors playing the role of the sound track. It was captivating storytelling.

Dark Horse did a nice job packaging it too! Great cover, nice introduction by Jim Steranko and clean look. Front cover quotes Stan Lee "As good as it gets!" and the back even mentions our favorite cartoonist, Stan Sakai. I hope it sells well so I can get a chance to read more Blacksad stories (edit: I just read these are the only stories. :( Too bad.) .

Thanks for the recommendation folks! I hope you all get a chance to check it out if you haven't already.

Peace, maka

More Blacksad please?

Post by go »

Dear Readers,
The Blacksad from Dark Horse is beautiful and well worth the price, imho.
The book is for mature readers.
The Dark Horse Blacksad actually contains 3 books currently available.
So Maka, I also hope Dark Horse will present the 4th installment of the series soon,
L'Enfer, Le silence (literally Hell, Silence), which will be released in French in September.......
The Dark Horse Blacksad is slightly smaller than the Spanish versions but contains all 3 books!.
The Dark Horse Blacksad does contain the wonderful endpapers from the originals.
If you like anthropomorphic crime noir, Blacksad is awesome.
Best wishes to all!

ps. You may also like to read "Blacksad The Sketch Files" about how the stories were created and developed.
ISBN: 1-59687-837-1

spoiler alert:
Please do not read any farther unless you have read Arctic Nation........

OK i warned you!

Did you love the way the white supremacists group is made of the purer white furred animals?
I particularly love the endpaper where Blacksad is standing outside of Las Vegas.....

I've heard that Diaz Canales and Guarnido have just about finished the fourth volume. It's set in New Orleans, I think it's about drugs and voodoo. There are a few preview pages on the internet.
