Anyone looking forward to the U.S. remake of Let the Right One In? I don't usually care much about U.S. remakes of European or Asian films like this (I usually look at them as just an unfortunate commercial necessity since most U.S. moviegoers wouldn't dream of watching a subtitled movie), but I have to say that this looks like a good one. Of course, we've probably reached a point where any movie featuring non-sparkly vampires getting a wide theatrical release is something we should cheer.

There's no way that it'll "surpass" the original, but in a way, I think that's kind of beside the point. I have a feeling that this movie will be an interesting kind of alternative take on the material. Of course, the original film was based on a novel, so there were probably people complaining about how the original movie was going to "ruin" the novel (and you could just as easily look at Let Me In as simply another adaptation of the novel even though it probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the original Swedish film). Someone on a movie message board I read has already seen Let Me In and says that it's really good.
Oh yeah, Chloe Moretz, aka Hit Girl from Kick A$$, plays the "Eli" character.

Dear Readers,
The "Let the Right One In" movie is not for children.
"Let the Right One In" is the best vampire movie ever made in my humble opinion.
I see no good reason to remake it.
There are plenty of good stories waiting to be turned into movies, Usagi Yojimbo for example.
Why not create a fresh movie instead of reincarnating an already perfect movie just to create a cash cow?
Will the knock off be as good as the original?
Best wishes to all!

I saw the original in theaters a couple years ago and thought it was ok. It felt a half hour too long IMO. The look of of the film was cool....it had a "Fargo" look to it with the setting/snow and all. The trailer remake looks like the other modern slasher movies though. I think i'm more interested in the Dark Horse comics story tie-ins more than seeing the remake.

If anyone's interested, here's a podcast interview with director Matt Reeves and Kodi Smit-McPhee ("The Boy" from The Road), who plays the "Oskar" character:

It wasn't that Cloverfield filmmaker Matt Reeves had such a burning desire to adapt the same John Ajvide Lindqvist novel that became Sweden's 2008 poignant horror sensation Let the Right One In, but with English-language remake rights already in play, the chance to make a unique story his own was an intriguing proposition. To his credit, for a remake that audiences never asked for, Reeves' Let Me In (starring The Road's Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a surprisingly solid cover tune that is every bit as eerie, tender and bloody as the original film

This movie got an endorsement from a UK-based horror movie critic whose opinions I respect:

"LET ME IN surprisingly good, as elegant as the original, more horrific, yet equally fairytale. Really liked it. Fabulous soundtrack."

I saw this last night, and I thought that it was good. If we had to have a remake of Let the Right One In, I'm glad that it's this film. I enjoyed it as a sort of "remix" or "cover version" of the original film, and I think the way that the movie transplanted this story to 1980s America was interesting (I think New Mexico was an interesting choice for the setting; the Pacific Northwest would have seemed a more obvious choice to me, but maybe the director wanted to avoid that in order to distance this film from the Twilight series). It may not be "necessary" strictly speaking, but how "necessary" are most movies in general anyway?
