Some critics tried to say that the characters were basically cardboard cutouts moving through the lovely scenery. But I disagreed. It's certainly NOT a "Hollywood" style movie, and the end was very moving because of the depth of the characters that was subtly portrayed.
A friend of mine went expecting a "kung fu" action movie, he was disappointed. It had too much "story" I guess to go with the flashy fight scenes for him.
I also very much enjoyed the calligraphy elements to the movie, and their relation to sword work. It was also fun to see the older style of characters as I'm guessing were actually in use at that time. (I don't pretend to be an expert on calligraphy, I only know some things.

on the dvd there should be multiple endings, like at the end, he deflects all the arrows, and wipes out the army, mmm random and pointless violence.
but your friend was dissapointed, all he needed to do was ignore the subtitles, and watch the incredibly noisy swordfighting action!
