Here's to wishing David Petersen the best of luck!
If I was a judge, he would definitely be the winner, not only because I have never heard of the other artists or books, but also because David's work on Mouse Guard is great.

Athena Voltaire is a great comic as well if you like high action pulp like stories. (Kinda like Indiana Jones)
Mouse Guard is fantastic and deserves to be recognized for it.
I haven't heard of the others.

Good luck, David.
Steve Bryant (artist of Athena Voltaire, and Manning nominee) says:
"Joelle Jones' work is gorgeous...but I think David Petersen is a lead-pipe lock."

As good as Bryant's work is, my vote would have to go to Petersen.

That is actually a good question because this expression does not strike me as correct. People used to say "lead-pipe cinch" to refer to a sure thing. Something that was almost certain to occur.
You can also say that something is a "lock" to indicate it is certain to happen. "Lock" and "cinch" have their own usual meanings which you can look up yourself.
So that expression should have been "lead-pipe cinch" or "a lock." Perhaps by combining them the speaker is indicating extreme confidence, but it also causes confusion.

I still can't believe you weren't nominated for an Eisner
