A few years ago, I read Monkey, Arthur Waley's 1942 condensed translation of the Chinese classic Journey to the West, in a literature class, and I enjoyed it a lot (I think UY fans would probably enjoy it). I'm interested in reading an unabridged (or at least more complete) version since Monkey leaves out a lot of stuff, including most of the second half of Journey to the West! There's a four-volume unabridged translation by Anthony Yu that seems to have received a generally favorable response. Would this be a good version for someone who liked Monkey but wants to read a more complete version of Journey to the West?
I noticed that there are a few other condensed translations of Journey to the West; has anyone read any of these? If there's a condensed version that serves as a somewhat more complete "good parts" version of Journey to the West, I would be open to reading that since the length of the unabridged Journey to the West seems a little bit daunting (an Amazon review of one unabridged version said that parts of it won't make much sense to anyone who isn't knowledgeable about Chinese culture, which would be a problem for me).
On a related note, I really wish that the tv series Monkey was available on DVD.

I'd like to see this.
I liked the animated short that Hewlitt and Albarn made for the BBC based on Monkey:
