I love Popeye the Sailor. Love, love, love, love the character. Always have. I stayed up late to watch the black and white cartoons in the early days of Cartoon Network. In the past year I discovered the awesome original comics by E.C. Segar. I even love the much-maligned Robert Altman film!

Which is why this has me really excited:

Ahoy matie!!! I love, love, love the character as well!! And I dig the Robert Altman flick as well! I thought that Robin Williams was perfect as the bulgy armed sailor! The only beef that I have with it is...too many musical numbers!

It will be nice to see Popeye getting a new start.

Abayo! :D

^That's right! I hope it will be as good a chance as any for a Groo newbie to hop on board.

I maintain a fairly small pull-list, but with Popeye (childhood cartoon favorite) and Adventure Time (grown up cartoon favorite) getting comics series as well as the recent addition of Dark Horse Presents it seems I'll be buying the most floppies I ever have!

Thanks for the news about Popeye. I love the old Popeye reprints, but they are reproduced very small -- hard to read with my trifocals!

I loved the Popeye movie. I don't understand why the hate about it.

^Well, despite the popularity Popeye is a rather idiosyncratic character (which the movie gets right) and Altman is a director with a rather idiosyncratic style, and as for the music of Harry Nilsson...

Well, you get the point. I suppose it was just a bit too odd for Joe Public.

Also, at Roger Langridge's blog he announced Tom Neely will share art duties for the book.

so, yesterday I got my monthly comic book delivery and among the fine books for my reading pleasure there was the first issue of popeye from idw...and I must say that I am pretty content with my decision to inlist this book, because it is a very great product.now, I told you I only remember popeye from the cartoons(animation) from tellevision and have never read the original strips, but I feel like this new adveture comic book must be pretty near the original for it is one fun ride till teh last page.the characters are fleshed out, I like popeye very much, didn't recall olivia oil really having a crush on bluto(who I thought to be named brutus from my memmory..maybe in german synchro they switched some names..)and even is afraid popeye might brake his stunning looks when fighting with him..tss tss tsss...
wimpy is a really amusing character who eats more than myself even;)...
even the paper quality brakes from the idw norm that I am accustomed to.they decided against their usual glossy slik paper and this helps the reader buying into these adventures all the more I think-even if only subconsciously so...
so, what is left to say?if you were not sure to get this book, I can only recommend it to you!

Really loved this first issue. The style and characterization is really close to Segar's original comic (though Olive thinking Bluto looks cute was a reference to the cartoons). The format makes it feel like something in-between a collection of Sunday strips and a normal comic book .

Starting in August IDW will add a second Popeye ongoing! Classic Popeye will reprint comics from the '40s and '50s.

I bought issue one and loved it. I bought one of the hard cover collections of strips. While the material was fantastic, I thought they printed the comics too small. It was not as enjoyable to read as it might have been.

I loved the movie as well. I did not know about the animated movie, but I look forward to that and I hope they are faithful to the original source material.
