Dear UYDers,

My daughter and I are heading to LBCC this Sunday to try and get some signatures in The Sakai Project. Any one else going to be there? If so, we can try and meet up for a snack or just to say hi. Post here or pm me.

Peace, maka

I'll be across the 'water' over by the Queen Mary, volunteering at a Japanese car show on Saturday, but I don't think I can make it to the Con on Sunday.....
Anyway, I hope you and your daughter have fun at the con!

Still waiting to see how my work schedule shakes out this weekend. There are a few Sakai Project artists at the show who I haven't gotten signatures from yet, so I'd like to make it out.

Kyle, thank you for letting me know about Ruben Procopio. I didn't get a chance to see him but I appreciate you letting me know.

I got everyone's to sign the book except for Dustin Nguyen (He was somewhere else every time I went to his table) and Greg Luzniak (I couldn't find his table). I also got James O'Barr signature (which is fun because he did a Santa Barbara signing back in the 90s that I went to). And on Shannon Denton's piece, I also got Danny Miki (inked it) and Hi*Fi Color (Brian Miller, colored it) to sign it. It was great fun to talk to everyone about why they wanted to participate in the CAPS auction, what it meant to them being in the book, and their thoughts about Stan and Sharon.

I learned that Steve Wyatt and his wife are the ones who did ALL the CAPS eBay auctions. That was a tremendous amount of work by both of them. Amazing amount of time and energy that they both gave. I didn't say this to them, but wish I did: I think their gift was the biggest because it was the most work and resulted in the most money. I can't imagine running over 400 auctions and packing and shipping all them all. That was more than a full time job.

Next to Megan Levens table was Jamie S. Rich. I said, "You were one of Stan's editors, right?" He told a story about how Stan reputation as the "nice guy in comics" was true. When Jamie was editing Stan at Dark Horse, it was his first editing job (I think that is what he said). And Stan gave him a complete set of the UY hardcovers with additional sketches. He was blown away. Jamie was super nice. He contributed to the UY 25th anniversary gift (http://25yearsof.usagiyojimbo.com/page2 ... 79-95.html). I forgot my list at Megan's table (Star struck, as always) and Jamie saw me later on at the con and brought it over to me.

Tone Rodriguez did this sketch, which I love, for my Artist Self-Portrait Sketchbook:

The Sakai Project gives me an excuse to talk with artist and all of them at this con were very nice. I dragged my daughter Angela along with me, but she told me she enjoyed hearing their stories too. It was nice way to spend the day with my daughter.

Peace, maka

Great story Maka. Thanks for sharing with us. :D

You're an exceptional person yourself, taking the time to talk to the artists and other contributors, and ask those questions. I would have just been dumbfounded, gotten signatures and said thank you. I'm always at a loss for words when I'm standing face to face with someone.

Geez Maka,
You really make me wish I was out there where all the contributors are appearing with such a great write-up! :)

And your story makes me think of how neat it would be if someone visiting with and chatting with all of those contributing artists could record those conversations for a DVD or audio blog. Kind of a behind the scenes look at the making of the auctions and the Sakai Project book.
