Dear UY Dojoers,
I posted this on Facebook with a picture of my Usagi watch. Reprinted here for those of you not on Facebook.
Three month review of the Stan Sakai's Usagi Watch.
Here are 8 things I learned wearing the Usagi Watch for the last three months (modeled after the Oatmeal review of the fruit watch (http://theoatmeal.com/blog/apple_watch):
Thing #1: The Usagi Watch will not replace your Usagi Yojimbo comic fix. You will still need to buy the latest UY comic issues to stay up to date with Usagi.
Thing #2: Battery life isn't a problem. The $10 watch battery is still going strong after three months. I haven't had to charge it or replace the battery.
Thing #3: The leather strap band the Usagi Watch shipped with was terrible. It fell apart after about a month of normal wear. The limited edition attachment to the body of watch required a different size strap attachment. This means I would have to buy two different size watch bands to replace the original watch band. That's silly. I just took off the limited edition attachment and bought one $25 leather strap from a local watch shop.
Thing #4: The crown can be pulled out to adjust the time. I recently went to Montana and they are an hour ahead of California, for some reason. I just pulled out the crown and twisted it to move the time forward an hour. Magic.
Thing #5: Phone calls, texting and notifications are non-existent on the Usagi Watch. It is a very focused device.
Thing #6: I don't recommend wearing the Usagi Watch in the shower or when swimming. I haven't tried it but the leather strap probably wouldn't like it. The Usagi Watch is easy to read in daylight or lit rooms. It does not have a built in light, so when it is dark, use your phone or digital alarm clock.
Thing #7: It's great for normal people. It doesn't record pace or distance or heart beat or any other health data. But it has a mean looking Usagi holding a sword that keeps me motivated throughout the day.
Thing #8: If you are an Usagi fan, the Usagi Watch will not disappoint. Unfortunately, Dark Horse Comics only sold 1000 of these in December 2000. They were $50. But eBay often has them for sale between $60-100 for you diehard fans.
