I just watched this new animated film. The plot involves Hellboy going to Japan to deal with some demons and it's filled with kitsune, kappa, obkaemono, sukumagami, tengu, and lots of other figures from Japanese folklore. The possessed folklore expert is even named "Prof. Sakai." Coincidence?
There's a great feature in the extra entitled "Hellboy Goes East" that explains some of the mythology and the filmmakers' desire to set the movie in Japan.
Good stuff.

As well as being a Usagi Yojimbo fan I'm a die-hard Hellboy fan. And this movie was Incredible. Not a real blockbuster budget but it was made by people who loved Hellboy. From the voice cast to the production designers to even to overseas artists by the looks of it. They all enjoyed working on this film from what I gathered watching the extras on the dvd.
Mike Mignola was eager to do something with japanese myths for a long time. When he got the chance thanks to the help of some talented an devoted people the research and detail that went into this was fanominal. Their take on the kappa was awesome. Allthough not tradtional it was close enough to recognize it and make it feel like a fercious man-eating demon of the water. While watching some of the later scenes the creatures that appear get stranger and far more bizarre. And at times some Usagi readers may spot something and say...
"Hey, I know what that is!"
Anyways, great flick.
And to those parties interested, be on the look out for Hellboy: Blood & Iron.
