For "crimson" or "scarlet", you'll find either the word that Steve gave, 紅 (kurenai) or the compound 真紅 (shinku). Those are names, not adjectives.
One example : 紅海 (kôkai), the Red Sea.
The second kanji, 暗, conveys the general meaning of "dark". The Japanese adjective is 暗い (kurai).
Steve, the second word you give must be only Chinese, I can't find it in my kanji dictionary. 敞篷
