So, you're looking for shows and manga that are anime but drawn by Americans?

Well, a good place to find American artists doing manga style is something called "Rising Stars of Manga". They are competitions hosted by Tokyopop. Artists write and draw a 20 page entry and if they are liked by the panel of judges, their entries are placed in a collection book. The top winner is given a contract to write a manga series.

Other winners have been given contracts by other companies as well.

The only one I've ever looked for though, is a manga called Peach Fuzz. It's rather simplistic, but very intrigueing.

The entries themselves, though very short, are always very good, and the styles are all different. You'll never find that much variety in a manga book anywhere else!

The judges also give their opinions on each entry and are always insightful. I learned a ton from reading those books and am VERY ready to recomend them to ANYONE looking for a good read.

As for American anime shows, I don't know of any but the ones you mentioned, sorry. :(

Hi Joe,
For American drawn manga, I would say that Antarctic Press is the first thing to come to mind for me. With Ninja High School, Gold Diggers, and Warrior Nun Arealla being some of the longer running series. They have a bunch of other series as well.

Check them out at...

Hello Joe,

One comic artist I like is Jill Thompson. She doesn't usually do manga, but she did do a Death:At Death's Door (Sandman) graphic novel in manga style. Here's a review:

http://www.thexaxis.com/misc/death.htm

She toured with Mr. Sakai a couple years back (Trilogy tours I & II) I believe.

I meet her in a comic book store in Berkeley in the early 90's. She was touring with Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell (Sandman/Sabastion O signing tour). It's too bad - only 10 of us who showed up (and being a true comic nerd, me and college buddy drove up from Santa Barbara to go to this signing). Jill did a did a nice (and free) sharpie / silver pen sketch of Sandman for me. She was very nice. She is also a great water color artist, IMO.

As for anime, I don't really know that much about it. Sorry.

Peace,

maka
