Currently i dont own a single Samurai movie. I have decided I want to.

Thanks,

I am by no means a samauri film buff but I've watched a few lately due to usagi fever. The Kurosawa ones seem worthwile. We saw a contemporary one the other night called Twilight Samauri and Gary and I both really liked it. Kinda quiet and lovely.

I'll second the vote for Kurosawa's Seven Samurai!

After that, checkout Yojimbo and Sanjuro, both by Kurosawa.

Then, for an idea of what some of the other directors were doing in the samurai genre, get the Rebel Samurai set from Criterion (Sword of the Beast - Hideo Gosha, Samurai Rebellion - Masaki Kobayashi, Samurai Spy - Masahiro Shinoda , and Kill! - Kihachi Okamoto)

then...

Dear Readers,
After those excellent movies please consider the baby cart series, Zatoichi, Sonny Chiba's samurai movies and his Jubei Yagyu tv series, any and all of the Musashi movies and tv series.........
I saw Shogun Assassin for sale at Walmart yesterday.
You are so fortunate to be enjoying these movies now using dvd technology with excellent video and sound quality.
Enjoy!
Best wishes to all!

The first Zatoichi movie is very aesthetic.

And i would like to add Kurosawa's Ame Agaru (after the rain), so beautiful...

I like samurai movies. Seven samurai is a must. 47 ronin is good. Also if you like adventure and nice storylines. Check out the zatoichi series of movies. 17 total I think? :?: but there is also a pretty cool movie called six string samurai. Kind of a cool rock and roll style samurai movie. if you like that kind of thing.

BUt if you onl see one....seven samurai certainly.

Actually I don;t mean to be a know it all but there is a movie based on the same guy Usagi is based on. It's a relatively new movie from japan. 2006 I believe. But I could be wrong. I remember at the end of the movie it said it was based on Miyamoto (spelling).

Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade are not too bad on the blood factor, and are really good stories.
If you're into Shinsengumi, there's the When the Last Blade is Drawn, if I got the name right. It's mostly about Saito.
You can't avoid the blood in samurai movies. But there are certainly some that have more than others, or emphasize it more than others.

I just got this one in the mail and am anticipating watching it very soon (hopefully tomorrow)
REVENGE (Adauchi)
1964 - B/W - Widescreen - Extras

This tragic drama shows a young man fettered by Bushido, the way of the Samurai, who tried to escape the chains of his position, but was being forced to die. When the Tokugawa Shogunate ruled the land, Tatsuno castle in Wakisaka Clan's home of Harima held an established custom, the inspection of the arms warehouse. The Government Inspector Okuno Magodayu found a slight bit of dirt on the point of a spear and mentioned it with disdain. Ezaki Shinpachi heard it and started an argument with him. Magodayu then sent a a letter of challenge to him because he felt insulted by a low-ranking underling without a title. As it turned out Magodayu was killed. Since then, Shinpachi and the Okuno family have had continuous revenge duels. The tension mounts as this story builds to an extremely violent climax, when blood must pay for blood if the clan is to survive! Co-starring screen legend, Tanba Tetsuro. This is a true Toei classic, no comedy elements, 100% "dead" serious! Superstar Nakamura Kinnosuke and master filmmaker Imai Tadashi created a samurai classic for the ages with this movie. With removable subtitles.

Directed by: IMAI Tadashi
Cast: NAKAMURA Kinnosuke, TANBA Tetsuro, MITA Yoshiko

It is a great forum for fans of samurai films and is also a great place to find rare and lesser known films from the golden age of Japanese cinema which are not available on "official" mass market DVDs with english sub-titles.

Hi again. There is a few movies of samurai period times. Check out RAN if you want an epic movie.

But the reason I am posting (I did enjoy twilight samurai a lot) is that there is a host (hand half full) of samurai tv series. Not sure if anyone is into those? Zatoichi had his series. But there are excellent series available. SOme are not uncommon to have 72 episodes.Although there were more of these tv series in the 1970s there have been some in the 80s 90 and 00s as well.

Ok just my 2cents

Probably my fav samurai series is Hanzo the Razor. It's like a combination of Yojimbo and Shaft. Gratuitious violence, sexy women, and some eccentric characters make it one of the best samurai series I've ever viewed.

ok seriously....does nobody love lone wolf and cub in here? lone wolf and cub 1-6 should be on your list if you like violence/gore. i'm into gore myself cause i love zombie movies and such as well. but the lone wolf and cub series imo are some of the best non-kurosawa movies. if you wanna check out the epic movies get the kurosawa stuff. If you want a taste of lone wolf and cub, buy a movie called shogun assassin from walmart its like 14 dollars if they still have it. its a combo of the first 2 movies put into one and dubbed. if you want a crazy samurai movie you could always get samurai reincarnation...not a superb movie but you can get it cheap and it is fun.

age/ maturity appropriate content?

Dear Readers,
Please consider mentioning the age / maturity content level when recommending movies at the Dojo.
We have some young members who may not be ready to see something like Hanzo, etc.

Best wishes to all!

ps.
Maybe a lone wolf and cub zombie movie would be great.
You can't keep the lone wolf down.......
