For Toshiro Mifune fans....

Every now and then, I mention on the Usagi Dojo forums that I also frequent a Samurai film forum known as the Ninja Dojo. The main sponsor of that web-site and forum is also responsable for the sub-titling and distribution of some of the better non-commercially released hard to find samurai films out there.

If you go on ebay, you will find a number of sellers offering cheap copies of the DVDs which Corey (and Merlin of SamuraiDVD) have sub-titled.

Of course, some of the rarer films are released in television broadcast quality because a newer digital version has never been available. BUT, if a better quality version has been released in the Japanese market, you can be sure that Corey (and Merlin) will get around to sub-titling and releasing a high quality version for fans of the genre.

Getting to the point of this post, Corey has just offered for sale the first volume of the 1972 Toshiro Mifune television series "RONIN OF THE WILDERNESS" which is a must have for fans of Toshiro Mifune and his films Yojimbo and Sanjuro.
RONIN OF THE WILDERNESS - Volume 1
"Koya no Suronin" - 1972 - Color - Fullscreen - Extras

Continuing the tradition of the Yojimbo movies, Mifune Toshiro stars as Toge Kujuro,
a wandering ronin searching for his own fame and happiness. With a sense of justice,
he travels the countryside, with his motley collection of outcasts - a pistol-carrying
ronin, a two-bit con artist and woman seeking revenge, following close behind,
unwittingly righting wrongs and protectin the common man.
This volume includes 3 episodes.

I remember this series. It was terrific. Every episode ended with Mifune fighting about 40 guys.

I remember Mifune, "Six-shooter", and the other guy. I don't remember the woman, though.

On my "next to order" list from Corey is BOUNTY HUNTER - Volume 2, featuring Wakayama Tomisaburo from the Lone Wolf and Cub films. the couple episodes included in Volume 1 were great, not quite as good as his role in THE MUTE SAMURAI television series, but still very enjoyable. Watching these shows makes me wish I had grown up in Hawaii with access to all these shows when they were new.

speaking of TV series does anyone ( few of us are old enough) remember a series called Samuari. Ya i know the title's not very distinctive but I loved it as a kid. All I remember was crushin' heavily on the sidekick whose name was Tombei

I wish they'd release Rikisha Man onto DVD, it was such a neat story. Mifune was as usual brilliant.

I also really liked the Samurai Trilogy; Yojimbo, Sanjuro and of course Zatoichi meets Sanjuro movies.

I don't think there's a film with Mifune in I didn't like. I wasn't into Stray Dog much but I think today I would be, I didnt pay alot of attention to it when it was on. He looks funny in normal clothing though!
