HI all,

Does anyone know of any manga or films that center on Japan's history pre-samurai and Mongol invasions and whatnot? I've heard something about a series by Osamu Tezuka titled Phoenix, I believe, that has a few volumes covering early Japan -- but verification woud be appreciated.

Thanks all.

Yes, volumes 1 and 3 of Tezuka's Phoenix deal with earlier Japanese history than you usually see in movies or manga. IIRC, they're set around 300 AD or so.

I should point out that they're not conventional historical stories and that they include lots of anachronistic gags and references to 20th century history.

Hmmmm...
There's not a lot that come to mind.
Inuyasha, maybe. It's set in the Warring States Period, instead of the popular Edo Period. However, it's more fantasy than historical fact.
