The Calamari Wrestler

Post by Ben »

Oh my god.

Oh my goodness gracious.

You have to see this movie to believe it. Imagine a simple joke stretched out to feature-length running time. It isn't even that funny most of the time, just weird. Like the title suggests, it's about a pro-wrestler squid. There's also an octopus and a mantis shrimp involved. Only in Japan...

It's a pretty fun movie; worth a rental if you find the idea of a giant squid who is a wrestler at all amusing.

Director Minoru Kawasaki has made several other movies, but I haven't been able to see any of them. One that sounds like it might be funny is The World Sinks Except Japan, a parody of the novel and movie The Submergion of Japan. Kawasaki's most recent movie is The Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit, a parody/sequel to the (fairly mediocre) 1967 kaijyu film The X From Outer Space.
