Has anyone here read the book Night on the Galactic Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa or seen the 1980s anime movie based on it? I have a copy of the book coming in the mail. I became interested in reading it after seeing clips of the movie on YouTube:

The movie was available on R1 DVD for a while, but it's out of print and expensive now. Another reason that I'm interested in seeing the movie is because the music was composed by Yellow Magic Orchestra member Haruomi Hosono.

I found a book of Miyazwa's poetry at the local library called Strong in the Rain. I like what I've read of it so far, and the introduction by translator Roger Pulvers is interesting too (Be warned that it includes some ending spoilers for Night on the Galactic Railroad).

I have a VHS copy of it. I did some art for a manga/anime company, and instead of money I asked to be paid in tapes (this was back around 1995). I got more than my money's worth in that deal.

Galactic Express is slow at times, strange at others, but it is beautiful visually. Of course, it has been about 10 years since I had last seen it.

I saw NIGHT ON THE GALACTIC RAILROAD while I was sick with the flu. My body was so thrashed, I was already wavering in and out of reality at that point, which made my viewing of the film all the more trippy.

Definitely not for the Jerry Bruckheimer crowd. It's the sort of movie you have to sink into.
