Wagashi is the typical sweets one eats during the tea ceremony, though nowadays it is common to eat sugar candies. Cane sugar was introduced in the 16th century. I think sugar beets or sweet rice were used before then.

We bought some of these sweets when we went to Nikko. It was almost too nice to eat.
Hinagashi is more candy-like, and tends to be sweeter than wagashi. If I remember correctly, it is also harder.
There are confectionaries as well such as manju and various mochi:

Look up wikipedia for manju/food. I cannot link to that site for some reason.
I especially like the ones filled with red bean paste, or white bean paste.
