How knowledgeable were educated people about physics back then? It's for part of a story.

I can't really tell you much about 17th century Japanese physics, but some of their ideas about biology were...rather interesting:

Whoa, freaky stuff. Glad I didn't live there or back then. O_o

I was wondering how many common-knowledge scientific things I would have to explain seeing as how some of the characters I plan to include in the story come from the distant past. Think Usagi (Usagi Yojimbo) and Nakoruru (Samurai Spirits/"Samurai Shodown") would have to have a concept as simple as gravity explained to them?
