Monkey (Saiyuuki/Journey to the West)

The first televised adaptation of Saiyuuki/西遊記/Journey to the West. It was dubbed in the UK as "Monkey," and obviously the Japanese were the ones who made it or I wouldn't have posted it in this subforum.

I actually read a condensed version of Jouney to the West called Monkey years ago in a college World Literature class. I recommend it.
I really wish that this series was on DVD. I love the goofy dubbing by British people. "Will you demons never understand? I love to FIIIIGHT!" Not really sure why Tripitaka is played by a woman since the character is male in the original story.
I think Osamu Tezuka worked on both an anime movie and a manga adapted from Journey to the West, but I've never seen either of them.

They couldn't find any male actors who matched descriptions of Genjo Sanzo/Xuanzang/Tripitaka's appearance.

Monkey was cool heh... the BBC even tracked down a couple of the actors from the series for short interviews when it did its "I love the 70s" series. Quite why we went for it and not the US I'm not sure... not that I'm complaining about a BBC decision now.

Tezuka Sensei's animated version was theatrically released in the US in the 1960's as Alakazam the Great, and featured the voice of Frankie Avalon. It was based on Tezuka's manga, My Son Goku. I have not seen it in about 40 years, but remember the great voice of Sterling Holloway (Winnie the Pooh).
