Daryl Surat gave it a positive review on the most recent episode of the Anime World Order podcast (I don't think that I'd even heard of it before listening to this episode):

IIRC, part of the reason why Daryl Surat praised it seemed to be that Japan hasn't really made any "generic samurai anime" for theatrical release in a fairly long time (He didn't count Ninja Scroll since that was an OAV). I think he said that the last theatrical anime movie to fall under that rubric was Dagger of Kamui about 25 years ago, and that's supposed to actually be more of a ninja movie (I haven't seen it). I'm perfectly happy to watch a "generic samurai anime" movie as long as it's done well.Gallennon wrote:It was good, but the plot came off as generic samurai anime.

Dear Jet
If you are "perfectly happy to watch a "generic samurai anime" movie as long as it's done well." you will be very happy with this movie.
The detail and animation is great.
Predictable but very enjoyable.
Best wishes to all!

Oh I am not downing it, it was a good film and I enjoyed it. But still seeing the amount of anime I have seen, I do not see it as the best representation of what Japan has to offer in anime at this time. But as a samurai anime it is very good.Jet_Jaguar wrote:IIRC, part of the reason why Daryl Surat praised it seemed to be that Japan hasn't really made any "generic samurai anime" for theatrical release in a fairly long time (He didn't count Ninja Scroll since that was an OAV).
