Pokemon characters painted in traditional Japanese style

Not sure which painting style this is. Of course, I can't really name many styles of Japanese painting other that Ukiyo-e, and I don't think that's what this is.
While we're on the subject, does anyone know if any of the Pokemon are based on Yokai? It just occurred to me that some of them might be (a couple of them look rather Kitsune-like to me). It seems probable that there's some kind of connection.
